Love's Refrain

Love's Refrain

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

The wind plays loves refrain.

"

first wife marsha and tate

First wife Marsha and mother to Tate

Love entered in my heart one day

a sorrowed, war-torn, guest

When she asked to be let in

I had her sit and rest

She woke my sleep with anguish

shook my hopes with tears

When my heart felt to sing

she filled its joy with fears

As now she has gone away

I miss the old sweet pain

Sometimes when night whistles in

the wind plays loves refrain

Some people just aren't meant to be together. Yet try to tell them that and both will join in chorus to rail against your attempt. Yet when they are apart they cannot seem to function without each other. Such is the mystery of love. I am old enough to remember the life, times and sufferings of Tammy Wynette and her ill-fated marriage to George Jones. In a 20/20 interview with George I remember how he still choked on her name and held his love for her long after she was gone. I imagine for him that is a tragedy with great remorse and sorrow.

"He stopped loving her today", that's what this brings to mind for me, one of the saddest country songs ever sung, and I think he sang it with her in mind. It's funny how sometimes we most want and crave that which is worst for us and our state of mental health. That which causes us to feel the most, be it good or bad, is often most memorable in our lives and hearts.

Ah the trials and tribulations of love! Love the song. The secret is to take the good of a relationship, keep it, and move on. But that pesky wind keeps a-blowing. Tell the man in the poem, just enjoy it!

I think one of the saddest songs ever written was George Jones' "He Stoped Loving Her Today." I guess he never stopped loving her...

Love is a complex animal - I actually don't write about it much perhaps because I am a grinch - but I am always amazed at the way poets breathe life into it. When the night whistles....loved that line especially

thank you i dont know where it comes from either
Oil and water comes to mind, but you are right...don't tell them that. You packed a lot of thinking and experience into this short piece. It brings to mind another song...
There Is A Thin Line Between Love and Hate...
A sad truth very well written.

Beautiful to me even if he stopped loving her "now" but love never stops and so is the beauty in this poem.

No one is perfect, so love can't be perfect. Structure can be gain through problems people overcome. A problem to one person might not be a problem to another.

Wow...without the pain there can be none of the sweeter stuff. So true that the things that can hurt us can also make us the happiest. You are still great as distilling complex feelings down to a few indelible word images. Great poem. And that's saying a lot for me because I have to confess I'm not a die hard poetry fan. Perhaps you'll change my mind yet Tate.

Sorrowed, war torn guest- the personification of Love as a being so damaged (suffering from a kind of ptsd) it cannot function in any healthy way- this is a tremendously powerful poem. It speaks of the relationship of Tammy and George but goes way beyond that. to so many ill fated love relationships.
