For My Child

For My Child

A Poem by Tate Morgan
"

If insight be what you lack then son take it all from me I shall give it to you freely in hopes that you may see

"

Tatertot

If insight be what you lack

then son take it all from me

I shall give it to you freely

in hopes that you may see

If love is what you should seek

what tales my heart might tell

It has known heights and depths

of the soul as deep as a well

If I could grant precious wisdom

to enlighten your fair sight

I'd say play with your children

teach each how to fly a kite

But learn these old lessons now

while I am here that you might see

For the day will sometime come

when my light shall cease to be

That eve my heart be silent

its music shall play no score

The mind will  go dusk quiet

to be heard from never-more

But heard next day the singing

will float out above the din

The Caroling Angels call

beckoning me to come back in

On that distant fateful morning

I'll stand before them to say

" I washed my soul with happiness

then taught my son to play"

Lovely. If I've had such a father...

I would avoid the shift to the more emphatic second person objective 'thee'. It's a bit awkward and clumsy.
It's a very specific form and to be employed in blank verse, or any other type of verse, it usually delivers a perplex meaning. My favorate example is elegies.

Anyhow, used merely for the purpose of rhymeing makes the poem look immature, which it is not.

Thank you very much!

Fantastic piece of wisdom and love - this was incredibly moving and I just can't imagine how anyone who reads this, and also all that have children, would not find it heartfelt and be moved to tears or deep emotion. This one is powerful and deep with loving intention - your expression of your hope for your son is felt throughout and is just a beautifully written poem. I am so glad you shared this - thank you!

This is a very touching poem, and a really good legacy to leave your son. It reminds me of the book 'Dear Sebastian'. Its full of widom and really well put together.

the end of this poem " i washed my soul in happiness, then taught my son how to play" is absolutly perfect. this is what I believe is the answer to what leads to a good afterlife.

This line: 'For the day will sometime come, when my light shall cease to be' brought tears to my eyes. Such a profound feeling welled up in me in reading this Tate, I am mother of an 11 year old son and can completely empathize with these kind, heartfelt words. This is truly a favorite of mine - going into my library straight away. I would love to read these words to my own son and hope he feels the same. Thank you, just, thank you!
Much Love and Light,
Siddartha
