Born and raised a Catholic I still find I often think on this conundrum. Why would a god want worship anymore than a father of his children? It would seem counter productive for a god to demand worship of you at the same time telling you as a father to be humble. God did not give me a brain to follow others like sheep. It would be wrong not to use it to question the concepts we hold dear. If this upsets someone I am sorry. Not for the idea but for the injury. I am forced by nature to question all we hold dear.

Yes, this is an issue of much controversy.
I think that in the trying and illuminating times we are living... it's becoming clear that religious organizations, while maybe having good intentions, simply create sheep. It occurred to me that most religious people consume the same things as the heathens, and the same consequences of the mindless consumption of the planet, cannot rationally be called 'righteous'.
So, what is the difference between the two? I see nothing.
I am reminded of a BlackSabbath song that is very spiritual, even christian, and one line says;
'are your thoughts so small, that you have to fall, in with the pack wherever they run?
will ya still sneer when death is near, and say the may as well worship the sun?'
That is how I feel really,
I don't think your poem is anything but illuminating. Salvation, reincarnation, spiritual transcendence, ... none of this will occur because we went to church, or did nice things, or got baptized.
It will happen when we correctly interpret our incarnation, through proving it, just like Jesus said.
Good work, Tate.
This one was a bit of a different twist for you!
I will throw down my (heathen and heritic) views here.
To me, God is the good, light and love inside of us that we bring and share with others. In a sense we are all God as he is described to us. We too have the power to create life (be it flora or fauna) and to take it away. To bestow grace upon a particular group of people and cast out others, the ability to make change, cause disasters, etc.. It is how we use these abilities that matter. Be it our own conscience on the life we have led that condemns us in the end.
Again, these are merely my hedonistic opinions. :)
This is a very deep and thought provoking write, Tate. We should always question. This is how change is brought about.
after reading almost all of the thoughs gathered around in this poem, i felt speechless.. no thoughts have come out, other than that we have talk about religion alot from the past months... so you know my thoughts already :) ~ i can only say from all the thoughts that gathered around, I'm sure the insights of the poem you have shared expound its bournderies in understanding one another's perspective. well thought-out poem, Brilliant!
Worship isn't just about us pleasing God it is for us, when we worship it lifts the despair off us and lifts us to a higher place. It places joy in our hearts and comforts our souls. Most of the bible has been misconstrued by the words and intents of man. Still another wonderful write from you Tate. :)
Again, this is brilliant. I wish more people would distrust their opinions. I think many people justify believing with good intentions and end up absorbing the happiness one feels from being morally outraged. In fact, I don't think anyone has ever wanted to be understanding after being morally outraged. In an evolutionary sense, it makes destroying your neighbor a guiltless and easy thing to do.
I'm with you on this one brother. If God wanted us to follow a certain set of rules and will throw you into hell for all eternity for not following them, then they should have been made crystal clear exactly what those rules are. Good write Tate.
A thought provoking write, I agree with you wholeheartedly, Tate. I have seen much in this life, and believe we would all be much better off, if we were spiritual people rather than religious people. Religion just divides us. Why would "God" treat one group of people better than another, just because of the popular religion in that area of the world?
This piece takes on a life of it's own, as through time, our prespective changes. You write with such depth of self, and because of that your work is inspiring, as well as thought provoking! As I have said, I believe "religion" is man made. Bringing division amongst those searching for truth. I "believe" Spirituality" is a daily relationship with our Creator. Thank you for sharing your wisdom my friend! ~ Jude :-)
