Spirit of the Wolf

Spirit of the Wolf

A Poem by MOMandWIFEistheLIFE
"

I wrote this poem for a dear friend of mine who is a Native American. We both love wolves and I have a tattoo of one on my left arm.

"

SPIRIT OF THE WOLF

He looks around, menacing, cunning, fearless;

he knows he has a family to feed and protect,

and he will do it at any cost,

even if it means his own life.

He is also a leader, watching over

the rest of the wolves in his pack.

He sees his prey and crouches,

waiting for the right moment to attack.

Growling softly, he watches as his prey

slowly approaches, unaware of the danger.

He runs, and the chase is on…

but he is not the only one who wants a meal.

He must fight the other wolves as well,

and in a twist of irony,

the hunter becomes the hunted.

But he will not surrender his meal without a fight.

He captures his prey,

knowing he must fight to keep it.

He hears a growl, and turns just in time

to see another wolf attack.

He crouches down, ears back, teeth bared,

ready to strike, knowing the need to will arise.

As the enemy attacks, he moves out of the way,

and the wolf’s strike is lost in the wind.

But the enemy regains his position swiftly,

turning to sink his fangs into the leader’s shoulder,

but it’s only a minor injury to the leader

who has been trained so well in many-a battle.

He fights back, sinking his fangs deep into the enemy’s neck,

holding him fast to prevent any escape.

The enemy weakens,

and the leader knows he has won another battle.

Despite his wounds,

he picks up his prey in his powerful jaws,

swiftly running home to his den,

and his waiting family.

He lays his prey for his mate and pups,

and as his pups feast, his mate comes to lick his wounds.

She knows what he has done,

and she is proud of her brave leader.
