Scene 5- Pajamas and Pizzas

Characters: Hans (21), Azure (18), Khaki (15)

Setting: Montessa's residence, the present.

Khaki: Where's mama?

Azure: Oh, hi. You're awake.

Khaki: Yes.

Azure: Mama and papa went to Antique to visit a sick friend.

Khaki: Who?

Azure: I forgot to ask...

Khaki: When will they be back?

Azure: Later tonight.

Khaki: Okay.

Azure: Are you hungry?

Khaki: Quite.

Azure: Can you wait for at least thirty minutes?

Khaki: No breakfast yet?

Azure: Mom hasn't cooked us food--

Khaki: You're cooking?

Azure: Yes. Just for today anyway. (There was a knock on the door.) Are you expecting someone?

Khaki: Nope.

(Another knock)

Azure: I'm coming! (opens the door)

Hans: Good morning!

Azure: Hans! Why are you here?

Hans: To see you in your pajamas.

Azure: Ugh. Go away. I look horrible.

Hans: (steps back and looks at the whole house) Oh. Your house is not burning!

Azure:  So you came here to insult me. (pouts)

Hans: Gotcha! (peeks inside) Hi, Khaki!

Khaki: Hello.

Hans (to Azure): Won't you let me in?

Azure: Come in.

(She opens the door wider and Hans goes inside. She closes the door slowly and senses the tension in the room. She thinks, "How will Hans deal with my passive and distant brother?")

Hans (casual): How are you, Khaki?

Khaki: Good.

Hans: Wasn't your sister successful in poisoning you? (Khaki shakes his head.) You haven't cooked yet, darling?

Azure (embarrassed): Actually I have.

Hans: Where is it?

Azure: Just kill me, please?

(Hans sees the burnt eggs inside the bin.)

Hans: (shrugs) No surprises there.

Khaki: Why are they burnt?

Azure: I thought it was okay to leave them in the pan for a moment so I read a page of "A Midsummer Night's Dream". Before I knew it, they're all black.

Hans: You shouldn't be trusted in the kitchen.

Azure: You should have warned my mother.

Khaki: Is there anything left to eat?

Azure: I'll buy sardines in the store if you can wait for a couple of minutes.

Hans: I knew something like this is bound to happen so I ordered pizzas. They should be here any minute from now.

Azure: Khaki loves pizzas.

Hans: Good!

Khaki: I'll just be in the living room.

Hans: What's on?

Khaki: Wrestling.

Hans: Cool. We will call you once pizzas are here.

Khaki: Okay. (goes to the living room)

Hans: How are you?

Azure: Bit sleepy. Anyway, you dropped me here earlier. Is that true?

Hans: Yep.

Azure: What did you and mama talk about?

Hans: She didn't tell you?

Azure: No.

Hans: Maybe because you are not supposed to know.

Azure: Why not?

Hans: Because curiosity kills the cat.

Azure: But I am not a cat.

Hans: You are a sweet little kitten to me. Until beer transforms you. (naughty grin)

Azure: Transform?

Hans: From kitten to tiger. (kisses her quickly on the lips) Meow.

Azure (whispers coyly): Darling... Khaki.

Hans: He's in the living room.

Azure: We don't want him to think we're up to something. (eyes playful)

Hans: I just miss my tiger. (leans toward her again)

(Azure gets hold of a tablecloth and throws it on his face.)

Azure (laughing): Sorry but I'm a sweet little kitten now.

(Hans catches the tablecloth before it hits the floor. He puts it on the table.)

Hans: Sweet little kitten in bunny pajamas.

Azure: What's wrong with my pajamas, eh?

Hans: How many eighteen-year-olds, at least the sane ones, still wear pajamas? And in bunnies, hello kitties, and  disney princesses? (chuckles)

Azure: Hey, they're cute!

Voice outside the door: Greenwich Pizza Delivery!

(Hans proceeds to the door, talks to the delivery man, signs papers, and pays the bill.)

Azure: Khaki! Pizzas!

Hans: Hawaiian Classic and Ham and Cheese Classic.

Azure: Wow! We can't eat them all up.

Hans: You're underestimating Khaki's metabolism and mine.

Azure: Boys.

(She gets plates, forks, and knives while Hans prepares the table. They sit around the circular table and eat slices of pizzas in silence.)

Hans: So, Khaki... How's the fight?

Khaki: Good.

Hans: Did they use chairs or something?

Khaki: Ladders.

Hans: Must be fun to watch!

Khaki: It was! Blood dripping out of their noses--

Azure: Please! We're eating.

Hans: It's not that not gross. (Azure gives him a look that spells danger.) Oh, yeah. So, how's school, Khaki?

Khaki: Boring.

Hans: When's your exam?

Khaki: Done.

Hans: When was it?

Khaki: Last week.

Hans: How was it?

Khaki: Failed Trigonometry.

Azure: What?!

Hans: What's your grade?

Khaki: 74.

Azure: I'm going to tell mama about this.

Hans: 74? Man, I got 73 in Trigo when I was your age!

Khaki (brightening up): Really?

Hans: Yep! I skipped classes and showed up only during exams.

Khaki: COOL!

Hans: Very. Ma'am Dello--

Khaki: You know her?

Hans: She was my teacher.

Hans and Khaki: Very boring! (laugh together)

Azure: She explains  Trigonometry very well. And really, if you were just paying attention to the class, you could have gotten a higher grade.

Hans: What was your grade in Trigo?

Azure: 92. Had I memorized the law of cosines, my grade would have been higher. Ugh.

Hans: What's your grade in English?

Azure: 96.

Hans: You have a terrible academic life!

Azure: Hans, it's your academic life that's terrible.

Hans: At least I had fun. (whispers to Khaki while Azure is busy getting a slice of pizza. They stifle laughter.)

Azure: Khaki, I hope mama sees to it that you get...appropriate disciplinary measures. Perhaps...ground you for a month.

Hans (whispers to Khaki): Forgive your sister. She turned forty years old too early.

Azure: I heard that!

(Cellphone ringing)

Hans: Excuse me. (speaks in a low voice) Mom? Yes...Yes...Sure. Bye. (ends the call) I have to go now. Delivery at noon.

Khaki: Thanks for the pizza, Hans.

Hans: Anytime! Just tell me if your sister attempts to cook again.

(Khaki grins.)

Azure: I'll follow you to the gate.

(Hans and Azure walk out of the kitchen.)

Azure: Darling... Thanks for visiting me today.

Hans: I'm just concerned about your brother's health.

Azure: Yeah, but thanks anyway. You seem to get along well with him. He's never looked so at ease in a conversation. Well, with my mama, yes. But to me, he gets monosyllabic.

Hans: It just takes a pizza.

Azure: It's more than bribery. I think he likes you.

Hans: Too bad I'm not into guys.

Azure: Hans!

Hans: (laughs) So... What are your plans for today?

Azure: Take care of the house. You?

Hans: Emergency delivery at noon then sleep for the rest of the day.

Azure: It's Sunday tomorrow...

Hans: Really?

Azure: It's a special day...

Hans: It isn't Christmas tomorrow, is it?

Azure: Hans!

Hans: Chill! How can I forget? Tomorrow's our first monthsary.

Azure (grinning ear to ear): Surprise me.

Hans: (pats her on her head): Darling, let your man do the magic, okay?

Azure: Men often forget important dates...

Hans: Not me.

Azure (wistful): I wonder what your surprise will be...

Hans: I'm thinking of giving you floral pajamas. Oops! I just spilled the beans. (smiles)

(Azure laughs.)

Hans: Got to go now.

Azure: Bye!

(She kisses him quickly on his left cheek. Then he kisses her on her forehead before heading toward the gate. He pulls the door open but he pauses and turns to look at Azure.)

Hans: I'm just wondering. Since you don't know how to cook, will it be me who's going to do the cooking, then?

Azure: What do you mean?

Hans: I mean...one day...when we get married.

Azure: When... Not if...

Hans: What?

Azure (pensive): "If" implies uncertainty. "When" is used for things that are certain to happen in the future. You could have said "if we get married" but you chose to say "when we get married". WOW.

Hans: What are you saying, weirdo? (chuckling)

Azure: (beaming) I said, you'll do the cooking, I'll do the dishes.

Hans: You'll do the laundry and the cleaning, too.

Azure: And you'll do the pregnancy, childbirth, and all that. (grins)

Hans: Hey, you're not playing fair.

Azure: I know. I'd make a terrible housewife. So you still have enough time to think about marrying me, young man.

Hans: I'll think about it overnight. I'll let you know what my decision is tomorrow.

Azure: Keep word; we must starve our sight/From lovers' food till morrow deep midnight." (Hans gives her a puzzled expression.) Just an excerpt from "A Midsummer Night's Dream". That's what Hermia said to Lysander before they part ways. Goodbye now, darling! Don't disappoint me tomorrow!

Blue, as a writer who loves using dialogue often, I must tell you that the flow of your screenplay is flawless. It is so easy to read that you really don't need too many facial expressions or gestures. The story line is charming and engaging, and the one syllable answers of Khaki seemed so perfectly fitted for a teenage boy. Where else in the world could you find a story featuring Pizza for breakfast AND Shakespeare.
“Ay me! for aught that ever I could read,
could ever hear by tale or history,
the course of true love never did run smooth.”
