Wake up America

Wake up America

A Poem by Ashley Lytle

The headlines are growing sadder
The tears are falling harder
My mind can't comprehend
Why the tragedies are still happening
Do we have no common sense?

Our sanity is being questioned
As it so rightfully should
For who in their right minds
Thinks anger is the cure
That oppression is the right of way
And that children should have to pay

Someone explain to me
Why these atrocities are still happening
Why we don't step up
And make the difference
The difference that's desired

Don't you hear the calls?
People are waiting for a change
Yet many still hide their faces
This isn't some nightmare
That will be gone when you wake
It's our living reality
Don't you understand?

So look right into those faces
The faces of those who have been mistreated
And tell me that your feelings don't swell up
Overwhelming your every sense
That you don't feel the heartache
Or a deep pain longing for justice
For isn't that our way?

Freedom and equality
We say it with pride
For that's our main desire
But wake the f**k up America
That's complete and utter bullshit
And you know it very well

Stand up and sing the song
Calling for equality
Calling for freedom
Let's defend our brothers and our sisters
From this most ghastly injustice

It's time to open our eyes
And see
Don't you believe?

Neat poem. Yes, as the times move into the future more and more atrocities happen. In our grandparents days there wasn't even such a thing as a terrorist.
