Phrase that Kills

Phrase that Kills

A Poem by barleygirl
"

certain words are show stoppers

"

When your fierce reply begins:
“With all due respect . . .”
nothing respectful follows.
(That’s what I suspect).

Bracing for the diatribe
that’s bound to reject
gentle words offered before.
(That’s the net effect).

So why not just kill me now?
Spare us the train wreck.

"With all due respect" . . . often a sign the speaker is not much of a listener.

barleygirl,
The word respect carries a great deal of power. Who gets the respect? Who deserves the respect? The phrase is a way sometimes of manipulating a conversation and preventing truth from coming out. Sometimes................
Your poem was a great analytical and short get to the point piece and really liked it!

The diatribe which you describe,
is somewhere we’ve all been.
With hackles right for flight or fight,
we stand our ground again.

Each time we think, ‘does that not stink’.
Reach in the bag for what a poet craves,
And draw a squared-off curve in the design,
To show the folly of rejected saves.

But save the wreck of all those trains,
Now hurtling through the maze?
No chance of that. Respect falls flat,
When starting with that phrase.

Wow. This is poetry my dear friend.
"So why not just kill me now?
Spare us the train wreck."
I have known and I understand the above lines. I caused train wrecks and I received the due karma in return. Thank you for sharing the outstanding poetry.

Another great observation, perfectly articulated. There's a ton of em I find irritating, I'm afraid...Actually that is one of em. Excepting the obvious, I dont like new speak either. Double hug...N

Aye, I think I know what you are talking about here. Come to think of it I realise there are so many times time when I come across a lot of people who said this and followed it up with their high and mighty talk trying to thrash my argument on a particular topic, without even having given an ear to what I even mentioned. Some times they are so interested to talk about what they have to say they forget that listening will actually help them more. and the best part when they spout all that nonsense and it takes me just a few lines to tear them apart... they realise that they just messed with the wrong guy here. I can't tolerate such people who a) disrespect the other person by not paying any heed to him/her and b) they spout all sorts of nonsensical talk and just because they use some hi-phi words they seem to think of themselves as very intellectual and knowledgeable people Another word which I think has a similar effect where it's trying to convey "Hey I am going to attack you right now..." would be "Please don't mind" Very irritating because usually what follows next after that are questions which seem to give the illusion that they are showing compassion when really all they are trying to do is invade the personal space and try to know more "things" about the person for them to gossip about later on..... Thank you for sharing

P.S. Sorry for venting out like this and not talk much about the poem as such but I guess just brought back memories of a few events I hated a lot.

Present generation habit I guess... Your observation on life and people is something that I admire and I know how clear and exact your views are... I have used that phrase in my life a couple of times until I realized that there is no meaning of the word 'respect' in that phrase.... It's a symbol of showing pride even if that person knows that he is wrong on the inside...very cleverly done... Clippings....
