Scent of Rain

Scent of Rain

A Poem by barleygirl
"

after 5-year drought . . .

"

After some dry years the rains are here early
still so balmy we get to dancin’ all squirrelly
wagging our tongues each new flavor tasted
soft sprinkles beckon us to prance buck naked.

Starting the season with a pile of firewood
rain on fresh-cut pine smells oh so good
it’s too temperate to stay inside by a fire
we frolic the hills inhaling all that respires.

The bunnies and I bop a hippity hopscotch
dogs deeply huff wet essence of butterscotch
a whiff of damp bay leaves wafting on the air
evaporates each worry so we no longer care.

Far exceeding what some snort up their noses
more layered than a fragrant spray of roses
a symphony of scents drives us purely insane
sniffin’ all that’s dampened by an early rain.

Awesome imagery and sensory details, with some humor and lightheartedness thrown in for good measure. I like it! I don't have too much to complain about in the rain department, but we've had a few dry spells up here. And the relief that comes with the showers can't properly be captured with description, but you did well at showing it by not directly describing it. I chuckled at reading about you and the bunnies bounding about; I mentally pictured you crouched down like a bunny and jumping around in a grassy field with them. What a sight that would be!

I worry about California's drought all the time, and so this news, especially when told in such a jolly and fanciful way, is pure splendor. (Gotta love that produce!) Having a very sensitive nose, I smelled all you described.

barleygirl,
"Scent of Rain" How true! The smells outside are so potent. I have not really included them much in my writing. I loved this so much. Bunnies, and doggies and friends all enjoyed together. So nice. You inspire. Kathy

You took me there and I could smell it. Fantastic imagery. Love the line "still so balmy we get to dancin’ all squirrelly". You write so elegantly. Enjoyed this for sure.

This is an awesome review that will keep a smile on my face all day! *smile*
The scent of rain is always welcome for all. Especially for a land parched for those heavenly pearls for years, it should be no less than big good news.
You have beautifully painted the celebration of first rain in this write. All the species and habitat of the land enjoying the heavenly bathe in your poem were dancing before my eyes. I loved the beautiful imagery in the third section and the explicit scent of the fourth stanza dipped me in earthen scent.
Thank you for writing and sharing this beautiful write....

Lovely. After a bit of a dry spell I find that first rain to be the best. It washes the dust from the air and everything smells clean and new again, A good write, B.
