California Everlasting

California Everlasting

A Poem by barleygirl
"

a native shrub of California chaparrel

"

Occasional coo-cooooo of a quail
beckons my boots to the trail
oaks don spanish moss like a veil
as the breeze rubs ravines of shale.

Dogs splash through a water gush
before scrambling up through the brush
aromas of chaparral are flush
with a thundering olfactory crush.

Pungent waves of sage contrasting
scented dog fur is broadcasting
a distinctive maple spray is blasting
from clusters of California everlasting.

Emanating a most delicious scent
even when dry blooms are spent
maple syrup wafts so succulent
on a nostalgic reverie I’m sent.

Hiking a childhood mountainside
to the piquant chaparral I confide
longing to become nature’s bride
holding my bouquet maple-dried.

The dry pale flowers of California Everlasting, shown in the photo, really do smell exactly like maple syrup . . . rubs off on my dogs, which scents my entire cabin for the summer.

This is beautifully spoken, illuminating the amazing light of these pale flowers. And though I grew up in California, and lived so many endless moments in the Sierra Nevada mountains, I've never known the California Everlasting. You awaken the flowers with deep wonder.

Thank you for taking me along on your nature hike, Margie! I think walking on a nature trail renews hope and refreshes zest for life. I could almost smell that sage! Great rhyming. Lydi**

Always a pleasure.
Imagine walking towards maple syrup. You would be running up that mountain. Everyday must be different in natures garden. I love your idea of air fresheners. Get the dogs to rub against the flowers. Could you not start a little business in scents.
