At the Bewitching Hour

At the Bewitching Hour

A Poem by barleygirl
"

spoof on the song "Elusive Butterfly"

"

Long ago I opted for an orbit through this wildwood
where a freely-wandering cottontail inhabits the hood
sipping me a fiercely independent state of mind
pursuing private crescendos luck would have me find.

Buffy the bunny shakes her snow-white teasing tail
beckoning me to join her foolishness out on the dale
darting under mossy veil to seek a saucy essence
through thorny tunnels we track a cryptic iridescence.

Finally a shimmering clearing offers a fleeting peek:
the most scrumptious buns I ever saw trailing a fine physique!
Oh please please dear God don’t let this be another vision
sure you fulfill all my needs (minus one nagging provision!)

What do you know my cottontail turns a transforming trick
at the crack of dawn moving past my window super quick
I always wondered who the hell that peeping Tom might be
now I know at the bewitching hour I’ll join you running free.

A friend (trying to be lovey-dovey) sent me a link to this song: "Elusive Butterfly" . . . & I got the wild hair to write a spoof on these opening lyrics . . .

You might wake up some mornin'
To the sound of something moving past your window in the wind
And if you're quick enough to rise
You'll catch a fleeting glimpse of someone's fading shadow
Out on the new horizon
You may see the floating motion of a distant pair of wings
And if the sleep has left your ears
You might hear footsteps running through an open meadow

I remember that song. That and having just watched a documentary on the Summer of Love means that my mind is in the place to enjoy this and the thoughts it brings. I love it. Should have an acoustic soundtrack. Sort of an American Alice in Wonderland and now I just wish I could stop Gracie Slick singing it in my head.

Thanks, Bgirl. A fine job indeed. Transported me back to the land of elusive butterflies sipping on crimson and clover. Is paisley ever coming back?

I remember having a record of Val Doonigan singing this. (I wasn't always a "stick in the mud" classical type).
Your interpretation of this was fun, with just a hint of salaciousness dropped in for good measure, which I don't remember noticing in the original version.**wink** (((Hugs)))

I'd forgotten the song, so I looked it up and listened. Oh, yeah, I remember it. Reading your poem/story, I thought first of the rustic little earthly garden in which you live, then rode along as the tale seemed to become the fairyland land of the hip, peeping Tom bunny. Very imaginative, my friend.

oh i like that song!
i don't read your poem as a spoof at all .. its very much a love poem to me ..with clever bits of innuendo and humor to add just the right zest .. i wake up often in those "witching hours" ... 2-3 am ... with between waking and dreaming kinds of vague impressions ... it usually moves me to get up and get some coffee ..might as well start the day :) i especially appreciate the fiercely independent mind and heart i see reflected in your first verse barleygirl ... i love this poem ..a rewarding read for me!
