Drippin' and Sippin'

Drippin' and Sippin'

A Poem by barleygirl
"

true reminiscing . . .

"

The most sizzlin’ summer since living here
I’m parched and hankerin’ for an icy beer
just as tempers are driven to bickerin’
the steady furnace blast is finally flickerin’.

Rare summer clouds are playful and puffy
coolness feels good but it’s humid and stuffy
scattered raindrops as we scurry for a tree
stroking damp hair we spark a reverie.

Remember rainy interludes out at the lake?
meeting in the restaurant for an afternoon break
towel-wrapped swimsuits and trunks were drippin’
coffee, tea, and soda pop a-plenty for sippin’.

Spontaneous get-togethers required no phone
mutual migrations were purely homegrown
some wonders naturally beckon a share
before social media or the dawn of software.

Just like the flow of instinctive wildebeest
we gathered for drinks and sometimes a feast
playing some cards and shaking some dice
we sat out the storm then resumed paradise.

I grew up at a 15-mile long reservoir where the various recreational pursuits required a summer staff of teens & 20-somethings who camped out & worked summer jobs there.

Yep, no social media and the only telephone within hearing range of the whole family...yet we managed just fine, plus didn't have the annoyance of people staring at a screen, stroking it like they are somehow one. I for one am glad I don't need to care about any of it any more.
What will we do the day it switches off and doesnt come back on? I look forward to finding out.

So sad that many young folks today will never understand this. But I do and it resonated soundly with my own memories and experiences. Well done, noble poetess.

that's one long stretch of reservoir .. sparks some fond memories of my own ..and your poem contains such innocence ;) always strong rhyme, rhythm and form and this is no exception .. ours was the Jamesville Resevoire .. but it was never staffed .. yet a very busy place in the summers :))

I miss the days at the lake. Some who would never get along found themselves sitting side by side, and having a good time. Nice one.

That, dear you, is what friendship and time spent really was/is. Making time last with silliness wrapped in self-made reality laughingly tainted by imagination! Creating this an that without fretting the rights and wrongs. Learning how to make vague plans then - without criticism, change mind in a few minutes and nobody to argue or mock! How to be when time was ripe and so was your mind and heart>

You made me dream a bit here and there, barley beautiful.. wanted to share your memories but maybe melded them with my own.. in my world.. but loving yours. :)

You've summed it up perfectly here Margie. Those "natural " holidays of camping, hiking, rock climbing and outdoor cooking, were the highlights of my youth. No communication with the outside world. Telephones were all landline, newspapers unobtainable. Did we suffer because of it.......?? ...... silly question.

It is a beautiful description and portrayal of a routine. I really love the way you put it together. Your poem gets all the more mesmeric by the use of terms like bickerin', hankerin'etc. (apostrophe gives it a special effect) and of course, the rhyming is intangible.
Your recreation serves my inspiration ::))
Thank you for sharing!

Yaaassss! Not a reservoir, but the river! We all camped out at the river, and the rain would drive us into tents...or town. This brought back the smell, the feel of the heavy air right before the thunderstorm was in full boom...loved, loved, loved tthis.
