Ever Had a Friend?

Ever Had a Friend?

A Poem by barleygirl
"

just fantasizing . . .

"

Ever had a friend who scratched that itch
with a twinkling trace of tickle?

Or how about the friend who reaches out
just as your heart goes kerplunk?

Ever had a friend simply tickle your fancy
with no need for anything elegant?

Or the one who offers empathy through touch
without any know-it-all counsel?

Ever had a friend who arouses your best
with wholehearted encouragement?

Or he who shares his springtime garden
and hands you the first strawberry?

Ever had a friend with sunny smiles to share
with minimal whining and despair?

Or how about igniting a host of passions
with only a playful ravenous glance?

Ever had such a friend? Neither have I . . .
but I’m not very good at this either.

With the inclusion of the next to last stanza, it sounds like a friend with benefits, in which case, neither have I. But all the others? Real friends want only your highest and best good, even at their own expense, and I've had a couple...in my whole 61 years, that understood what real friendship means. The "minimal whining and despair" also seems to be the deal breaker in relationships that appear promising in the beginning...

Good write, good fantasy. When we all have personal robots...let's make sure Apple or Google has a "friend" chip option.

I have a friend that fills the bill
much as you describe
He's right there when I need him
no speck of diatribe

There's one piece of the action
where he falls on his face
He'll grab that first strawberry
and never feel disgrace

The little dog I speak of
is only half-foot tall
He's underfoot at every turn,
and loves me best of all.

You are welcome my dear friend.
A true and trustworthy friend is very hard to find, plenty of fair weather ones about, but as is often the case, when no longer there's nothing in it for them, off they go!

A finely penned, fellowship poem, sincere and candid in style!

Hi Barleygirl! what a lovely piece you have here. I feel very happy having to share my thoughts with you on this topic. I have many friends with this too and NOT one person. i do NOT believe in a perfect friend apart for GOD. we humans have flaws. Hope you have a lovely day ahead.

I enjoyed your poem Margie. I like the structure of it, the way it made me stop and ask myself those questions, of which I can answer ‘yes’to all of them. I am an Aries, ‘a true friend’ and I am lucky to have found solid and lasting friendships in my life. What would we do without our friends. Thanks for sharing...and ‘just fantasizing’ ...🙋

which means, I think, is that we must always continue to improve ourselves from where we use to be; Unforgiving and unloved. Unwilling and un-ravenous. Have we ever really had anything at all that we can call "ours"? Our sex, our lover, our kids, our thoughts..? It makes you think that everything is borrowed from that hypertext format where everything in our lives can be accessed directly from our display of it. You know what I mean emma, I must be in love because I show love to someone else. Real life, where people act reciprocally is so unrealistic indulgent..But it makes for wonderful poetry........love always...dana

A perfect friendship is all about caring and loving unconditionally, Godly tolerance, sincerity as well as tact. Egos too must be bridled so much. From my experiences, all of this may not be possible in today's fast-paced, material, individualist society. Not our fault. Our microcosm makes us so. I know I can't be such a perfect friend so I don't expect it from my friends. I have a friend who is very caring by nature but won't share her inner feelings much. Another friend is loving and generous to the core but so careless with my stuff and plans. I am sincere, caring, generous but I tend to lose patience quickly, have a temper and I just close up at times.

Yet, heartwarming glimpses of these qualities can be seen in different people, each touching me in a special way. So, fortunate indeed are those who found such perfection in their lives. I'll just cherish the goodness I find in my imperfect yet endearing friends and try to give back, to my very best.

Thank you for such a thought provoking subject. You are such an awesome writer. God bless!
