Fresh-Baked Bread

A Poem by barleygirl
"

been baking some good stuff . . .

"

What I enjoy most on a warm winter day
is a tradition that’s gone by the wayside
punching and kneading my worries away
stretching soft dough keeps me occupied.

Wanting my ritual to last all afternoon
I’m prone to engage in double-proofing
shunning the use of machine or spoon
only bare hands can avoid any goofing.

Pungent live yeast and drizzles of honey
enhance the irresistible wafting scent
there’s no need for plenty of money
baking fresh bread is a day well spent.

Whiling away these leisurely hours
savoring the constant draw of desire
after sprinkling the seeds of sunflowers
toasted nuttiness is lifting me higher.

Fresh from the oven my little loaf steams
waiting to slather butter on my first slice
finally my tongue is drenched in dreams
and my belly is long gone to paradise.

Such a beautifully struck, gentle poem in perfect rhyme and rhythm, fraught with imagery and nostalgic sweetness … you swept my heart with this one and put, you in your moment, warmly into my mind's-eye.
Brings to mind, Margie, my Granny and her huge cast iron wood oven, hot crumbled cornbread in cold buttermilk with a spoon, and hand churned butter (we all had a turn at the churn) with blackberry preserves we had picked, but her homemade bread was the best tasting and smelling to fill a young lad's world with fond memories … I can still hear her high, sweet voice singing in Welsh, standing there in her flour sack apron and long, thin cotton, flowery hand-sewn dress.

You brought me great peace … thank you, Dear Margie🌻 ⁓ Richard

What a good poem. My wife cooks bread from a bread machine, but it stills smells good. Like this poem, I think you put a lot more effort into cooking than we do. CD

I love a bakery in the early morning. Tempting and tasty.
Inspirational indeed. I love bread to death, and home made is the best. So every word was read by me with out most attention, so much so that I felt the smell, and could visualize every move. That is how good the construction of this poem was.
Very well written and certainly relish!!

Nothing quite as delicious as warm fresh baked bread....especially homemade! I remember making loaves of challah bread with my grandmother....I could almost smell the aroma wafting through the kitchen as I read your words. That butter will melt into the bread in a heartbeat....yummy! Wonderful! Lydi**
