Feel Your Whiskers

Feel Your Whiskers

A Poem by barleygirl
"

for my best friend (RIP) . . .

"

Sluggish December sparkles stay low in the sky
with barely the gumption to grill an afternoon
lazily doing the day in short skips ridge to ridge
and any accumulated warmth goes “poof!”
the moment thick chaparral swallows the sun.

Such shivery sunsets play on and on for hours
the barely darkening universe seeping along
I go to the glass to catch the day’s last dazzle
an ember radiates warmth all around my neck
and I know you’re here . . . I feel your whiskers.

When chill winter gloaming is toasting my heart
with memories of how I would laugh and laugh
when I picked up the phone to your hearty voice
no words needed as we chortled our shared joy
into murmurs and nibbles of sweet nonsense.

You’re still nearby although it’s been three years
you know how good these years have been to me
as you’ve watched me take your lessons to heart
thank you for teaching me to finally love myself
when the gloaming glows . . . I feel your whiskers.

dear Margie... you have the gift of expression that touches our heart in so many ways. The whiskers of memory brush over our life when bright colored lights and falling snow are settling on holly trees. You always have Poet friends who understand. truly, Pat

Good friends come and go.
Great friends, dead or alive never leave you.
Like your description of winter. Slightly sluggish.
It's the time of year we slightly stand still.
But strangely enough. It's the time of year we start to recall people who walked with us for a time.

Such a sweet, tender write. What a lovely tribute to one who gave so much. Was really an emotional, thought-provoking couple of paragraphs that make you want to cuddle with the fuzzy bestie.

Just perfect in imagery and sad in content. Every line unfolds in charming descriptions till the moment of truth when death takes away our beloved pets and the lessons we do learn from them.

You are welcome either way.
What a sweet tribute to a lost dear friend, Margie. Your poem conveys your pain, but also your gratitude and love. Like death, winter is inescapable--but so is spring, and therein lies hope. Thanks for sharing with us.
