Powdered Wigs

Powdered Wigs

A Poem by barleygirl
"

imagining the old times . . .

"

Lately prominent folks are racking their brains
to recall any overlooked character stains
notably those waging political campaigns
ask: who will exhume their sleazy remains?

Let us now consider the eighteenth century
despite those flaunting a flawless pedigree
most sexual offenders faced a harsh penalty
with syphilis as a permanent penitentiary.

Lifetime venereal disease left so many bald
like a neon sign showing all who’ve trawled
confident that discovery will be forestalled
in powdered wigs the powerful were dolled.

Can you just imagine the seedy office scene
where entitled buffoons thoughtlessly demean
behind closed doors the obligatory routine
leaving prey covered in a powdery sheen.

Sexual misconduct is a centuries-old tale
now often busted by the prevalence of email
but at least no longer revealed by a wig so pale
a rose-powdered pouf letting proof prevail.

Things are getting so bad now, that you can no longer have a one night stand. Just incase it's bites you on the bum in ten years time. People in power. People wanting to move up the ladder. Always a bad combination. Thinking wigs might be my next business venture.

Dear God, this is a phenomenal discourse (that rhymes!) regarding this hot topic. Well done.

I'm always surprised at how many MEN are surprised at the frequency and length of time that these occurrences have been taking place: from unwanted verbal attention to rape. And I'm amazed at their naivete that women were silent until recently. I don't think all men are stupid, I never categorize entire gender (20 yrs. of bartending!), but Lordy! Sometimes I wonder if they live in a parallel universe where s**t don't happen like it does here in the real world.

You laid out the story so well. I enjoyed the twist of the past and how you tied it all together seamlessly.

So sad that it is a sin that continues no matter the consequences

thought-provoking write. this sort of thing not new as you so poignantly tell. not even powder and wigs can provide a cover-up for the indiscretions of those "buffoons". just ask harvey weinstein (84 as of last count) or some politicians. probably just the tip of the iceberg - how many do we not know about?

I am smiling here...though I am not sure that was your intent. Picturing powdered wigs atop the heads of Lotharios who were infected with venereal diseases. Sexual harassment and misconduct is nothing new for sure. Well written, Margie. Lydi**
