Powdered Wigs

Powdered Wigs

A Poem by barleygirl
"

imagining the old times . . .

"

Lately prominent folks are racking their brains
to recall any overlooked character stains
notably those waging political campaigns
ask: who will exhume their sleazy remains?

Let us now consider the eighteenth century
despite those flaunting a flawless pedigree
most sexual offenders faced a harsh penalty
with syphilis as a permanent penitentiary.

Lifetime venereal disease left so many bald
like a neon sign showing all who’ve trawled
confident that discovery will be forestalled
in powdered wigs the powerful were dolled.

Can you just imagine the seedy office scene
where entitled buffoons thoughtlessly demean
behind closed doors the obligatory routine
leaving prey covered in a powdery sheen.

Sexual misconduct is a centuries-old tale
now often busted by the prevalence of email
but at least no longer revealed by a wig so pale
a rose-powdered pouf letting proof prevail.

Things are getting so bad now, that you can no longer have a one night stand. Just incase it's bites you on the bum in ten years time. People in power. People wanting to move up the ladder. Always a bad combination. Thinking wigs might be my next business venture.

Clever and witty. I love it. Even centuries later, they still can't hide. I think justice from past centuries would be fitting. Nice work, again, Margie.

ahahaha sorry..i have to laugh in your closing line..so true ..sexuality tops all human lists from the very beginning ..what gets me is the bandwagon frenzy...90 years ago...etcetcetc... well yes our fore fathers and mothers all gave in ... abuse of the power of ones position takes a demand..a threat and an answer ... if NO .. then to court .. that day as far as i'm concerned .. there is no excuse for our character weaknesses .. the choice is always ours ..unless physical force is added ... all this crap is infuriating ... and "Hello!"when hasn't Hollywood been a sex playground ... love your rhyme and rhythm always barley ..and great job to bring this topic up in the cafe ... do you think it is also a bit distracting? i mean .. lets see .. we have terrorist bombings and vehicular homiciding and a Korean wacko who plays with nukes and bluster ... oh and lets not forget the dept ... gabazillion zillions and no discussion about that let alone real solutions ...oh my ... sorry dahlink...off my soap box now ;} thanks for the opportunity to rant a little meself :)) ... feeling better ...can give love and hugs now ..with your permissions of course ;)

The width and depth of sexual harassment in work place now spread deep, I wouldn't be surprised if they digup a wig or two! Your selection of topics are as enlightening as your style of writing. Um beijo.

What a great feat of imagination! To go back from present day misdemeanours to the old days of powdered wigs and venereal disease and baldness (is that really true or is it just FAKE NEWS?) is a sign of an unusual mind!!! I did laugh a lot at this - it is so corny!
Cheers,
Alan

Excellent! Perfect execution and clever working of a relevant theme with humor and grace. Technically, historically and clinically valid content. Beautiful form, flow, cadence, rhyme- imagery that cuts to the repulsive quick! Great allegory. Wishing them all their just, bald, desserts...

This has to be the wittiest poem that I have seen from you Margie. You have always intrigued me with the range of topics that you cover, but to be able to put forth such a serious subject that plagues this country as well with such a valid social explanation of early aristocratic fashions is brilliant. Powdered wigs indeed! Thanks to the spotlight of the inter-net and the rising bravery and indignation of women the wigs will no longer suffice.

Perhaps our obviously participatory "leader" will protect them. NOT!!
