Nighttime Romp

Nighttime Romp

A Poem by barleygirl
"

collaboration with Jon Roggie . . .

"

He nudges the door open
water dripping from his tail
after splashing in the rainfall
paws paint a splattered trail.

Grabbing a couple dry towels
before chasing down the hall
I curb his muddy enthusiasm
to dodge a bedspread brawl.

Curls in front of the fireplace.
Tired.
Paws twitch,
chasing a dream.

Yip! Snip! Whine! Yip!
Sleepytime sobs
spread smiles.

Here in California, we don't get much rain in recent years -- only 5" (13cm) so far this winter! . . . So wet dogs are not a problem very often!

The contrasting styles of the stanzas helps to create the two viewpoints of the " protagonists". The self protective human v. resigned soggy dog. Our response with our muddy hound is slightly less poetic, but quite effective... ** smile**.

Awwww....what a cute write. I could picture the scene. No fun having a wet dog running through the house. The love you have for your dogs shines through every line. Lydi**

I love that you loved that line! Thanks for stopping by to share! (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie
Margie, you tricked me! I saw the title and thought something much different that what I read. Still, it is an artful and enjoyable read and a bit different from your other work. As you do so often, you brightened my usually dark den tonight with this piece. Congrats on a successful collaboration!

ooooooooo you are waxing free verse me dear! ....pretty risque' is it not?! ;) you captured a moment all dog lovers know and love to hate ...water everywhere ..Bella has been dainty all her life ..won't go out in the rain, the snow, the wind ... won't put her pretty (big) feet in a puddle. However, since moving to the wild forests and inspired ( i think) by little puppy Beauregard ... they both are walking ankle deep in the stream and love it ... still the Mastiffs, a retriever, are not. you poem is endearing and warms me heart and mind .. its 1 am...super blue moon is all that...supposed to turn blood in the dawn hrs.... i am ready

Lovely poem Margie! It was lively and playful and got me remembering the black lab our family had while I was growing up, she was soo sweet and playfully energetic like the dog you describe here.

"Yip! Snip! Whine! Yip!
Sleepytime sobs
spread smiles."

Beautiful use of onomatopoeia to capture that moment and the last two lines closed the poem so sweetly.

Very nice, light and warm:)
