Garden Party

Garden Party

A Poem by barleygirl
"

inspired by Saumya's facebook comment to me . . .

"

In the garden I often putter
springtime sets my wits aflutter
balmy winters are for early sowing
celery and parsley briskly growing.

Abundant nibbles, likely squirrels
high time to seek skilled referrals
“did your bunnies invite them in?”
Bloomin’ Botanist asks with a grin.

Early dawn spying through a pane
while furries hop gaily down my lane
instead of serving wine and Havarti
my bunnies are hosting a garden party!

Potted plants are now adorned sparsely
as squirrels sport goatees of parsley
mice seek tender shoots and nibbles
as my hose spills carrot juice dribbles.

Hear me now, Scarlett and Peaches
don’t encourage these hungry leeches
later on you’ll crave a leafy snack
wishing you had all this celery back!

Ahhhh, Margie, thank you sooo much for sharing this piece, it's just what I needed to read right now. I had one hell of a morning and I don't think my brain is working properly so I'll try and keep this review concise and on point.

The lively, vibrant, light and joyful imagery of this poem was an absolute dream to read. It really took me out of my odd headspace and away to your blooming green garden, no cares but what the bunnies might nibble on. Again you did such a wonderful job selecting words and phrases that give your poem a real life, an aliveness, like it's literally alive and growing. No, I've never done drugs. Seriously, you have one heck of a green poetic thumb, you paint nature so well with your words, in this and alot of your other poems. It's fantastic and enthralling to read.

"as squirrels sport goatees of parsley"

Laughed out loud at this line and loved how you rhymed sparsely and parsley. Not a terribly complicated rhyme, but one I've never heard before and it was quite satisfying.

As I said before, thank you for sharing this, it really brightened my mood today and took me away from reality for a bit to experience your garden party:)

Thanks Margie.

This is the kind of poem that could bring someone, in fact people of all ages so much joy! It certainly made me happy as it brought back memories of the stories I used to read as a child so thank you for that.

OK,OK, OK!!! It's 70 to 80 degrees & I'm planting in my garden. Where I'm sitting, I'm staring out at 12 inches of snow that blessed us on the weekend. LOL ;-) Glad to know you're still with us.
Your title brought back memories...'but if memories were all I sang, I'd rather drive a truck...but, it's all right now. Thank you Ricky Nelson.

Your poem is well written...the rhyme sublime...and once you've been bitten...there's nothing like Havarti & wine.

At last ... the Cafe is open again. No wonder your critters are having such a feast. I saw your poem earlier, but the "crash" occurred before I could appreciate it. Your amusingly descriptive skills paint a wonderful picture of our lack of superiority over these cunning little raiders . Of course, you could consider teaching Scarlett and Peaches karate. That should scare them off.

This is such a playful dance of joy! How I love my gardens, and in days of ice and snow right now, it's wondrous to feel their warmth through your words of pure pleasure. Smiled at the image of the party too. Reminded me of the bunnies I used to raise. They would have gladly joined in! Thankful for the inspiration that spoke to your muse. :)

In my garden, what makes me cross is
Patched up grass with rampant mosses
Vermin squirrels grey by name
Play their food concealment game
Once smooth lawn is torn to shreds
I daren’t look at the flowerbeds
Such effort for some measly shrubs
I’ll pave it over, get some tubs!

I love this! It's so delightfully frivolous, while at the same time conjuring absolutely wonderful images of the changing seasons and the little furry monsters destroying your garden while you watch with good-humored tolerance. The warmth and humanighty are captured beautifully!
My personal favourite verse is:
'Early dawn spying through a pane
while furries hop gaily down my lane
instead of serving wine and Havarti
my bunnies are hosting a garden party!'
Havarti is yummy - not sharing with any bunnies!
A great tour de force, my friend.
