Poetry Man

A Poem by barleygirl
"

inspired by 1970's Phoebe Snow hit . . .

"

Lila’s front gate dons a lemon-lime flutter
baby ribbon streamers tinted barely butter
dewdrops dot a coral rosebud tinged yellow
another installment from her poetry fellow.

On the next block multi-colored origami
nests in the limbs of Linda’s apricot tree
who knew a secret admirer was so dedicated
a lyrical love his word crafting demonstrated.

Pinwheel buzzes around down on Lilac Street
her poetry guy Lola prays she’ll someday meet
for now she unfurls his bead-trimmed missive
and wonders whether she’s been too passive.

A lone mailbox mounted on a splintered post
into this last poem Lonnie poured his utmost
Paloma’s the only one he’s seen face to face
her poem’s adorned with queen anne’s lace.

But this afternoon he won’t be going inside
behind mixed metaphors he’d rather hide
all he has to give are scraps of poetic fluff
hoping his enigmatic gifts will be enough.

i think poets have that tendency to be passive...this is sweet...she wants his attention...wishes he would be more forthcoming...but he feels his poetry is all he has to give her...the poor poet who has just words...and doesn't realize how strong they are.
that was a great song, also...

Ok, been there, (on one side at least) done that and bought the t shirt.
Wrote to and about all of them. Never counted them, (did really up to a point) but they all got something writ by me from I think age 11 onwards, (she was called Linda). Bemoaned the fact that I couldn't put them to music. And bemoaned even more the fact that they probably hated me and went for someone who wasn't the last one picked on the football team and had to wear a bri nylon shirt when playing football.
Love this because of all the above.

Poetry man, Lonnie is an artist. While he is distributing baby ribbon streamers for lila. milk coloured origami for Linda, pinwheels for Lola. All adorned with his words. And another recipient of his verses Paloma, is the only lucky one who has seen his face. He is courting the ladies with his words and he thinks they are sufficient to have his distant relationships.

This has such a 70's feel to it that I hear it with Marc Bolan adding his vocals to the words.
To me, this is finding the right balance of being seen and being heard. It does strike me as odd that a lot of poets and writers aren't as adept at conversation as you might expect, but perhaps that is because of all the time they immerse themselves in thoughts rather than actions. Perhaps it is nerves, or perhaps I am talking nonsense, I mean typing nonsense. Que surprise there then:)
Then there are the ones like me, who could talk nonsense for a living and still manage to put in overtime each day, but much prefers silence :)

Serendipity again Margie- I saw Phoebe Snow at the Beacon Theatre in the 70s and she sang this beautiful song! I remember how she spoke to her audience and shared her tough life experiences. She was a gifted and courageous artist and single mom to a child with special needs. Your lovely poem honors her. You write of flowers, innocence, vivid colors and sensitive non-verbal expressions of love- “behind mixed metaphors he’d rather hide”. Sometimes it’s so hard to speak- and so we write and hope, like the humble Cyrano , that our loves will understand.

Yes Bgirl, there are many poets who will hide behind their words, rather than step out from behind their
scribbles, for fear they'll be shot down.
It is too bad, as they will never know what the outcome would really be.
A fine poem and a good write.

P.S. thanks for the reminder of Phoebe Snow.

Aloha, what a generous and inspiring write. It speaks in parallels to the actual song and as I read your poem a line from the actual song sung out loud and clear - ‘you’re hiding something sweet, please give it to me’ .... she wants and deserves more but perhaps (to him) his words are greater than he could ever be?

I must add that ‘Poetry Man’ is one of my favourite songs and instantly brings memories of my mom, I still have my parents record collection 3 of which are Phoebe Snow she was so beautifully unique and beyond talented, and a little known fact an incredibly devoted mom. My apologies for my rant. A wonderful poem, inspiring.

My responses can't do justice to your wonderful writing Margie. I was blown away by this poetry, the characters, the colour, the strong rhythm and rhyme. Subject matter, of such interest. Those words he writes ARE him. You can almost reach out and touch someone by the words they use. What a great pity he doesn't feel that they are sufficient and wants to hide behind them.

Phoebe Snow, incredible voice. Didn't know her, but listened. can understand her being inspirational.
