Crap father

Crap father

A Poem by barrywatkins

His children never met him

but, apparently, they all resembled him.

And for their part they loved him as they felt they should,

secure in the knowledge that he also loved them

(from the cryptic and often contradictory messages

he provided them with, via certain old blokes,

who claimed familiarity with him from back in the day).

During his absence, the children suffered horridly

and were often ravaged by the great evils of the world.

Yet he never came to their assistance,

remaining all the while aloof and desperately,

achingly loved.

What a crap father,

holy or otherwise.

I am not sure what quite to say ... My real father was not around either, though he was a good man ... He divorced my mom for unfaithfulness--undisputed because I sat in my aunt's lap while mom was busy in the back seat at age 3, but parents don't think kids will ever recall such things ... So he had justification to leave my mom, but he had no justification to desert me, to go off and marry another and start another family as though I had never existed ... So, I cannot say that I understand, but I can relate, somewhat to your mental and emotional memories and anguish ... Well done ... More people need to know that a man is expected and damn well should stand by his children regardless of what happens between him and his wife ... Thank you for this piece that stirred many memories of the past, not all good ...
