To Tory

To Tory

A Poem by Becca Bishop
"

We all have one friend that enters our life like they were meant to be there, and no matter what happens they're always a part of you. They change you into something better.

"

Do you remember? Do you remember?

Remember when I accidentally tripped you?

And we suddenly found,

That by that small act,

We were friends?

Remember - do you remember? - that night in my back yard?

First sleepover. Late summer.

We stared up at the stars, our young minds hazy.

Imagining we were on an island

Or on a mountain maybe.

Or in a different world

While the glowing windows of home lay only a few feet away

I think, I think

That was the day

We found we were friends.

Remember how the swing-set was our castle,

And we climbed the trees like monkeys?

Remember how we never went a day without seeing each other;

How we played Rapunzel on the kitchen table?

We used to irritate your big brother

And pretend your house was a science fiction book gone wrong

And I knew you like the back of my hand.

Do you remember? Do you remember?

Remember - do you remember? - that night in my backyard?

Last sleepover. Late summer.

Right before we left.

We stared up at the stars, older but not too old

As time pulled us apart from ourselves.

The stars spelled out our lives,

But I think - that for the first time - you saw something different.

And that night I discovered we were still friends.

Do you remember? Do you remember?

The cars drove away.

You stood in your yard.

And as I watched -

Out the back window with tears already dripping -

You seemed to grow younger. Purer. Sweeter.

And as I watched

I saw us again

Two wild children fighting monsters,

Rescuing princesses, crawling through the jungle.

It was at those moments when I knew we were friends.

Maybe best friends.

And as I watched, the two memory-children faded,

One leaving, one staying.

You raised your arm -

A goodbye, a salute

And I raised mine -

A goodbye, a thank you.

Because you came into my life

And it was changed

For the better.

Wow, this is a great poem, poignant and somehow innocent like a child's words...the emotions you have portrayed are very childlike in their characteristic of being pure and innocent...great write!!

Your profile sounds like a child and yet I see these words of an intense woman in her recollections. Which are you?
