Reparative Therapy

Reparative Therapy

A Poem by k
"

I had to attempt a ballad for class, here it is.

"

“Mom, I don’t want to go back,

please don’t make me.

I fear another session

might be enough to break me.”

“Darling, you have to,

it’s not up for debate.

Please don’t fight this,

I’ve enough on my plate.”

“They hurt me and shock me

and put ice in my hand,

then say terrible things

and I don’t understand.”

“God wants to love you,

but he can’t love broken things.

These people will fix you,

and show you what He brings.”

“If I am so broken

why’d he make me this way?

God makes everything perfect,

that’s what you always say.”

But mother wouldn’t hear it

so again he went

to another appointment

in the church basement.

He sat in their chair for hours

as they talked off his ear,

saying things no christian boy

would ever want to hear.

“God doesn’t love you,

at least not yet.

You can fix this,

you just have to repent.”

And when finally he got home

he stepped up to the pyre,

and prepared himself

to meet with Hell’s fire.

This is loosely a ballad, it probably doesn't follow all the technical rules of a proper ballad. Thanks for reading, any criticism/review is welcome!

There really are people who think that praying can change biology. In my opinion, people are born gay. Yet, I still believe there is a higher power. There could be a couple of things tightened up and quotation marks would help distinguish dialog but other than that, a fine poem.

I too don't believe that praying can change biology. I also don't believe that God makes mistakes. We are the way we are. I have had quite a few friends who happened to be gay. I don't believe that any of them chose their state. I feel that God loves us all no matter what gender or combination of genders.

Take care - Dave

Wow. The last stanza. Up until that point, despite the content being troubling, the tone you've set deliberately conveys a sense normality, a typical mother-son exchange. Then the last stanza hits and pow.

Whoops. My bad. I was thinking of another writer and got mixed up in my review. Sorry. I'll get back to you shortly on the tightening up. :)
