An Old Flame

An Old Flame

A Poem by cantmakeyouread
"

reflection of years with a wet match

"

Her back tingled.

Knowing what she knows now

she knows how the warm stream down her spine,

could only be a river of red tears.

Blood tickling as it trickles.

Only intensifies when the knife is removed

And dangling in front of her.

She realizes that

It all started with a smile.

She made the mistake of smiling back.

But what she didn’t know,

is that behind pink lips bore bloody gums from the daggers that regurgitated tense hellos and forced salutations.

A friend.

A foreign title to the girl with the pyromaniac for a soul,

The meek heart,

The feeble mind.

She was

Nice girl with pretty hair and light brown eyes.

Her skin glowed even in the darkest of rooms.

Her body matched glass coke bottles.

Her voice was so soft and sweet.

Like taffy;

Tooth decaying, but you keep eating

as her dinner remains untouched,

In fear of falling out of hollows of her stomach.

Holes burned in the shapes of letters.

Letters forming words that were merely touching her ears,

But scarring her heart,

Invading her mind,

She screams

“Please just leave me with mine!”

And it was here.

Where Things fell apart with ease.

No physical trace of disease,

but her mind saw what her friends couldn’t.

Her heart took what her family wouldn’t.

Her soul-searching searched for more than what she hoped for.

Found matches and firewood,

She grew warm.

A fuzzy feeling she thought

Was from the dimple in his right cheek.
