1,001 Haiku,

1,001 Haiku,

A Poem by Carl Teegerstrom
"

I have a goal to write 1,001 Haiku. I hope you like them!

"

1          Waves

Waves break on the shore

The sand shifts beneath my feet

Yet the shore is still.

2          Snowy Roof

Snow buries the roof

The hut's dry breams groan and creak

The cool wind whispers

3          Ceiling Fan

The hanging fan spins

Shadows casted on empty ceiling

Whose terrain erodes away.

4          Lightning:

Lightning’s fiery whip

Snaps with resounding thunder,

the sky’s left silent.

5          Katana Quench

Katana quenched

hot red flesh bends in water

then bends back as steel

6          Smith

Hammers ring and sing

the blacksmith swings and strikes, but

his mind is silent.

7          Sunshine, Wintertime

Sunshine, the shade's cool,

wintertime, the fire's warm, and

trees are still my friends.

8          Pen

Silver pen, black ink,

digging into page, thin lines,

a blob on the nib.

9          National Panic

An empire panics,

the ocean depths are still dark,

bright heavens still turn.

10        Catastrophe

O CATASTROPHE!

Thou art dreadful, and yet still

the desert's barren.

11        The Godfather Poster

The poster's wrinkled

full of valleys and mountains,

smoothly glistening.

12        Lamp Night

The street lamps are bright,

the sky burst like dark nightshade

yet, there's no sharp line.

13        Coffee Cup

The cup is empty,

coffee still drops from its side,

frozen in brown stains.

14        Wet Snowflakes

The rainy day's grey,

droplets float like wet snow flakes

in the warm lamp light.

15        Puddle Stars

I see many stars

through windows, beneath street lamps,

in every puddle.

16        Broken Rock

A rock is broken

the crack pings like metal, but

dust rises like ash.

17        Black

Black, no light escapes,

so cool, there’s no scalding heat

of lights far too bright.

18        Snowy Ash, Ashen Snow

Snow, ash, both so soft,

one froze, the other burned, now

one melts and one cools.

19        Ripples on the Moon

The full moon shines bright

whilst veiled by ghostly clouds like

ripples in a pond

20        Burning Moon

The full moon burns white,

her rays blast away the clouds

to chill the still air.

21        Lunar Surface

The grey continents

of the moon’s face are bastions

‘gainst the creamy seas.

22        To Syne: Obsidian Pupils

You pupils glisten

like obsidian against

you creamy, white eyes.

23        To Syne: Euphrosyne

O Euphrosyne!

Muse with Aphrodite’s charm

and Athena’s wit.

24.       To Syne: Just Peachy

Your face curves softly

like ripe peaches harvested

from Autumn orchards.

25        The Talons of Dry Leaves

The wind rustles leaves,

dry, scratching at the concrete

like eagle talons.

26        Basketball

Isn't it strange that

a basketball rings like a

bell or singing bowl?

27        Obsidian Sapphire

Her hair glimmers

like liquid obsidian,

dark as the sapphire's heart.

28        Whetstone

The old, whetted knife’s

wet edge was cut clean by the

damp, glossy whetstone.

29        Subtle Inversion

Seven syllables,

five syllables bookend those

seven syllables.

30        Cigarette Butts

Those cigarette butts

that strew the streets indicate

the life of cafés.

31        Old Book Smell

Old books smell sour

like their yellow pages, yet

it’s so bittersweet.

32        New Book Smell

New books smell so clean,

soon they leave to break their spines

and bleed life's marrows.

33        Waterfall

First from the sky to

the mountains, then off the cliffs,

thus the waterfall.

34        Fire Crackle

The fire crackles sound

like tortilla chip eaters:

pop, crack, crunch, strain, pop!

35        Logs Crumble

When the logs don't crack

but crumble in the fire, they

sound like broken glass.

36        Dark and Stormy Night

Can thunder comfort?

Can cold, pattering rain warm

you by a firplace?

37        Slither Drops

Cool drops slither, pool,

drip,drop, patter on concrete

floors from cracked ceilings.

38        December Rain

The rain falling sounds

like cold wind that rustled leaves

and now rustles rain.

39        The Raindrops in Lamplight

Thin raindrops shoot slant

through lamplight like meteors

briefly bright then gone.

40         Autumn Rain

You know the sound well

rain on boughs of autumn trees

whose warm leaves you know too.

41        The Fog of Rain

The rain falls like fog

you can see through and be still

in cool solitude.

42        Windshield Wiper

Windshield wiper paints

light grey streaks on dark grey glass

like a bamboo brush.

 43        Good Bye

Good bye, forget or

return, either way, as friends,

we still say good bye.
