Extinguishing A Mood

Extinguishing A Mood

A Poem by Chris Shaw

Sometimes I burn a candle,
a saviour in a storm.
It dances in a pool of wax
to give my spirit warmth.

At times I play at teasing
to keep myself amused,
by breathing on its lucent flame,
I'm sure it feels confused.

Where do I want those shadows
to fall within the room?
Where do I want the brightened flame
to lift the late night gloom?

When all around is darkness,
the flicker of this friend,
eliminates the brooding thoughts
that randomly descend.

I praise the light you offer,
the solitude I choose,
but most of all I praise you for
extinguishing my blues.

This is another great favourite for me! Your words have for me, worked uniquely here, to personify the candle in such an amazing way that I identify with it like someone I love. Some people too, provide such solace, company, amusement, assurance and light. Kudos to you Chris!

People have been lighting candles to pray and lift Spirits since long before the Birth of our Lord. Personally although I don't worship fully as a Catholic, I often pray and light Candles at St Mary's on the Quay, the Catholic Pro-Cathedral on Bristol Centre. Beautiful thoughts Chris for these dangerous times.

I begrudge no being solace wherever they may find it. I find mine in poetry and old movies, hot tea and hugs from my daughter. Blessings of peace, love and light. F.

A lovely lilting piece of calm in verse here Chris. I could imagine sitting at the kitchen table in the dark as dusk falls just mesmerised by the candle flame and the melting wax, one of those calm times even if feeling alone.

Many thanks John. This one is an oldie out for a breath of fresh sir. Much like me :))
I have always had a thing for candles. They are such a perfect example of selflessness. I love the incandescent light that it gives. It's so peaceful and warm. You have described a very beautiful thing with greater beauty.
