Boys and Puddles

Boys and Puddles

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

( goes without saying doesn't it? and no kidding this is exactly how it happened)

"
A muddy puddle in the park
attracts a boy's attention.
He pauses first to look at it
unsure of its dimensions.

He finds a stick to poke at it
to ascertain its depth
and from the cheeky grin he gives
you know he'll soon get wet.

His welly boots are clean and new,
for sure they must be tested,
for why would Mum invest her cash,
his thoughts ran uncontested.

And Mum is chatting with her friends
so hasn't seen the threat.
In any case the dog's arrived
and Mischief is their pet.

What happened next is no surprise,
the hound's jumped up to greet him.
He lost his balance and fell in
and now they're busy splashing.

From head to toe are soaking clothes
and Mischief's tail is wagging,
but Mum's expression tells it all,
she's on her way and fuming.

As a child, I can remember wanting to explore the world's existence. Every child; a mischevious little being. This sweet writing makes me smile and think back on how those days used to be.

Well, at least it was the dog's fault this time. I guess it's a boy thing, as I recall being pulled into a few puddles by those silent sirens, sweetly singing. I'll bet a lot of girls are tempted, too.

There is a giant smile on my face right now. What a delightful scene you paint with your words in this one, Chris! A boy and a puddle....no boy can resist splashing around and the dog, well, he was his partner in crime! Actually, now that I think of it, no girl can resist puddles either...I know I couldn't! Great one. Lydi**

This made me laugh Chris. Reminds me of a tale, my man, told me of his nephew who was with his mother on a walk. When he was a toddler and they were out walking and he wanted to jump in all the puddles near there home. And he did. She was having a fit. And he was as happy as a little pig in a sty. Covered from head to toe in mud and dirty and soggy rainwater. He thought this was funny. And she was just worried about cleaning his clothes.

Boys will be boys and moms will be moms. But, what good are puddles if you can't jump in them? This was a fun one to read Chris. It felt very musical to me.

and I'm sure that she almost had a heart-attack when she saw him, as I'm sure that she will lose her voice soon from shouting and screaming... while him cleaning!

Christine - the picture you portray with your words. You make it soooo easy to see and better yet, remember the myriad of puddles I and my friends enjoyed.
Tell me true, was it ever that way with you?

Take care - Dave

Really liked this one. Reminded me of when my daughter came back from a school trip. Her wellies were full of water and she was soaking. The parent who was looking after her was scared in case we lost our temper but we said as long as she had fun we didn't mind
