Spring Fever

Spring Fever

A Poem by Chris Shaw
"

(one from the archives)

"
It's not with ease that I besmirch
those catkins swaying from our birch.
They cling to brushwood, golden bright
like pendant earrings worn at night.

A cloudless sky has summoned spring,
but shaken pollen has a sting
as itchy, streaming eyes have I
from particles set free to fly.

A thumping head, a fever too,
my mood has turned a shade of blue,
so I must search to find some pills
to solve the problem of my ills.

i, too, deal with this...never had it until years of living in Southern Illinois...but the sinuses go crazy in spring and fall...both.
a shade of blue reminded me of that one-hit wonder group...shades of blue and their song..."oh how happy, you have made me, oh how happy, you have made me" which is certainly not what you are thinking as you reach for those pills.

I understand this well
there's bad ragweed in
Iowa and the pollen is
very high in Georgia and
was always miserable.

But a beautiful way
of saying it and I love
the Rhyme in this piece.

Oh wow, SUPER lovely read! I love this poem so much--it just seethes attitude. I always enjoy thinking of how I'd read things out loud, and I can totally imagine a performance of this piece played with exasperation and sarcasm.

Of course, the language is truly, truly lovely here, so it works even no matter how you deliver it. You did a fantastic job choosing your words, rhymes, and rhythms. I'm really happy I got to read this today! Thank you for sharing :)

The days of Spring. Some folks, the growing flowers. Can make us need the allergy medicine. I can't stand the cigarettes. Make my eyes waters and I cannot breath. I do understand the poem dear Chris. Always a pleasure to read your work.

Lol! Me too, Chris. Everybody here is commenting on how the allergies this year are so much worse than usual - my eyes are running constantly. As for Spring - well, our trees have only just leafed out. It's June, for heaven's sake! Everything is so late this year . I hope the weather gods remember how to do summer!

Thanks, Chris. All the very best to you too.
It is amazing what the old iambic pentameter can do for any topic, even allergies. Loved the rhyme scheme and steady meter of this one.

gorgeous poetry, your blend of beauty of nature's things surrounding you, your descriptions too, with the malady of pollen's unpleasant affect gives this piece a curiously rueful flair, i love the rhyme and flow of it
