Lightningbolt

Lightningbolt

A Poem by Carlton B. Reid III

Children cry throughout the night

as grey clouds fill the sky,

and teardrops obscure sight,

each child asking why.

Why does patience run out

like a child asking why

cliffs give her doubts

for she just wants to fly?

Why does kindness cry out

 like a child asking why

playgrounds make him shout

with joy, and booboos make him cry?

Why does anguish crawl out

like a child asking why

she has to stand,

when she’s about to die?

Light dips in the quiet of the night

as it streaks across the sky

instructing children with no sight

“Light strikes to answer why.”
