Saying good-bye

Hurts

You vow to stay in contact.

You'll write

e-mail

call

"There's always Skype!"

But deep down,

you know it won't be the same.

You've said good-bye before.

It's not the deep relationships

you've lost.

Those changed

but stayed.

It's the casual ones.

The people who were part of

orchestra

your favorite class

the church

those groups you loved because of the whole make-up

not one person.

Those are gone forever.

Now, to do it again.

Author's Note

I am in the process of finishing up two years of teaching music in Guyana, South America. As exciting as it is to final go home. Saying good-bye is so hard. This was my attempt to capture what hurts so much about saying good-bye. Does it make sense? Or is it too much my personal experience?
Also I don't know why there seem to be boxes around certain lines. I can't make them go away!

I'm sorry, I wish I could tell you that it will hurt less, but when your high expectations and final solutions marry your actual life, you will have many substitutes and not enough real. It will be your fault, and not at all you fault. You will hurt, but you will write that hurt- no one will see it but you will know that it was seen- we will find a way, altogether, for that to be enough. I'd tell you, if I were that sort, that it will get better, but surprise, it definitely will.

Yes, this makes perfect sense to me and I think you wrote it from the heart which is where all writing should come from. I remember my last day of high school and having similar feelings. I knew all the fun I had was going to be a memory and there was a sadness in the leaving. But life must go on. There are new memories waiting for you. I wish you luck.
