Last Date:  A Poem by Steven Cash

August 23, 2012

What I’m Against: Dating where you aimlessly hop from person to person, leaving all involved heartbroken. It rarely ends well.

This poem is unfortunately based on a true story.

---

He said, “Hey, you’re pretty, I wish you were mine”

He asked me to dinner that Friday at nine

I could not refuse his words so heartfelt

His was handsome as ever, and his smile made me melt

I dressed with care, only picking the right dress

I spent hours choosing, and tossing the rest.

He came to my house in his shiny black car

He opened my door. It was good so far

As we bought tickets, he held hands with me

Told me he’d watch whatever I wanted to see

We shared the popcorn, and even a coke

And at dinner I talked and talked. He seldom spoke.

The months that followed were aptly the same

But I could not help but notice the change

The calls were more frequent, and the texts wanted facts

What I did, where I was, and things like that

I decided to confront him at 10 one night

His parents gone, at his house we began to fight

He said that he owned me, and that I was his

The sex we had before solidified this

I was repulsed by his harsh words

Believing I was only his was only for the birds

That’s when he disappeared into his room

I knocked and pleaded for him to return soon

And he did return, not a minute later and my shock only begun

There in his hand was a small handgun

He said if he couldn’t have me, then nobody will

He shot twice before I spoke, and I fell and lay still

Now my last date is with the guy at the morgue

He will never know the details of this story so torid

My family will cry, and my ‘love’ be in stripes

But was it all worth it just to be loved by a guy?

Most poems can't hook me in the beginning and keep me until the end, but this one did. I'm not sure why, but I love this poem. I love the beginning, where it seems like the start of a normal relationship anybody wants, and then the change in actions over the course of the relationship. I never expected the ending, and maybe that's why I'm drawn to this - because it was such a surprise. It's unbelievably sad, and crazy that someone could do that and live with themselves. Anyways, great job!

"I dressed with care, only picking the right dress"

watch your word repetition.

I have to be honest, I usually dislike poems that rhyme. I am not actually sure why, maybe out of principle and protest against people who think a poem has to rhyme to be a good poem. Despite my disposition, i really really enjoyed this. I'm sorry that it is true.

Glad you liked it
I don't think i expected the story to end the way it did...especially because it was a true story. it makes the reader feel a mix of emotions, and just, well, think about the situation. Perfect job.

This was done with a perfect skill level. Only problem is that this is a true story, and i do not want to believe that really happened, but i can not deny that. People are crazy and something needs to be done about that. I guess a major remedy is for more girls to realize their self worth and stand up for themselves. I guess everyone needs to realize their worth.

Oh, man ugly how emotions can lead to insanity in some people. You write very well, definitely didn't get lost or feel bored in the read. Not a great piece, speaking of my writing, but just really true "Selfish Motives" reminds me of this guy. Thanks
