Greatness isn't always a big Thing
Written by: C. Lee Battaglia

I watched them.
Silently.
As they hit the Man,
I hid in the shadows of the night.
They took his wallet.
They ripped the clothes off of his back.
As they left,
I walked over to the naked man.
He was covered in his own blood.
He was knocked unconscious.
So I picked up the small man into my arms and walked to my home.
I cleaned his wounds and washed the dirt off.
I bandaged him up.
I gave him some spare clothes.
Then let him sleep.

I had noticed that the man had a small piece of paper in his hand. It was a picture of a women and a new born child. I figured that was his wife and kid.
The man was probably on his way home or to the grocery store to pick up some food for his wife and kid.
What if I hadn't been there at that moment?
He would have died in the freezing weather.

The morning came and the man slowly arose to his feet.
"What happened? Where am I?" The man asked me.
"You were mugged. Your now at my home…"
"Why did you-" he stammered, "Why did you help me?"
"Oh my dear man, I couldn't just leave you there to die… I brought you to my home because you needed someone to set you back on your feet to walk back to your family."
He started to cry as he asked, "How can I ever repay you?"
"Only one thing, walk back home and give your wife a kiss. Tell her that you love her and make sure that your little boy gets the love that he deserves."
Crying he said, "May god bless you."
I gave him a hug and said, "Greatness isn't always a big thing."

Heartwarming short story about how the smallest bystander can be the biggest hero to anybody. Thought it was great.

Thank you! I appreciate the comments.
There's an innocence to it that feels nostalgic despite the evident pain. Quite uplifting.

Yeah it's been long! I've been good and this based on a true story...
I liked and I agree with the story. What we give can change a life. Mrs. Ford, owned a third of the Ford company. Gave to charity 400 million dollars. He request was. Never tell the people where the money came from. After her death. People came out and appreciated the life and kindness of a wonderful woman. Thank you my friend for sharing the excellent poetry and wisdom.
