Courage To Leave

Courage To Leave

A Poem by Marie Harrison
"

A poem about deciding to leave a bad situation permanently.

"

Courage To Leave

As the jagged knife

of your lies and deceit

tear into my flesh

week after week,

my bleeding heart

has been dying

to leave you.

With every razor

sharp word of

contempt and disgust

that spills from

your mouth,

my mind has packed

my bags and dragged

them to our front door.

I’m waiting for my chance

to flee from you once more.

This time I'll be gone forever

because not an ounce of love

or compassion beats in

my heart for you anymore.

Now I sit at my kitchen

table waiting to gather

enough courage and

strength to permanently

walk out that door.

This poem is about domestic violence and how hard it is to leave permanently sometimes. Whether it is from fear or just prefering the routine, sometimes it's hard to leave.
