Painful Memories

Painful Memories

A Poem by Chong N. Kim
"

It's about either holding on to our past of empty vision or moving forward from the pain.

"
Painful Memory
The room is dim,
slides of photos begin to flicker
memories fill the room
until it reveal blanks
Empty shots
repeating over and over.
You hear the air of the machine
follow by a fainted music box
playing in one of the bedrooms
an empty crib
a broken doll
You lift the doll
close to your chest,
you feel the pain within
You can't bear to imagine
the horrid assumptions,
but reality begins to sink in.
She's gone,
Where to?
Why?
How could this have happened?
You hold on to the grief,
making yourself insane,
as the music repeats itself.
You stare into the empty walls
of photos you took down,
What is there to do?
What is left to live for?
You must remember,
this was your past,
a child was broken
but a woman is now healed.
You must move forward,
so you can be the voice
for a girl who was once lost
can soon be returned.
The you before the trauma,
is gone.
The you today is standing
even if all you can muster
both feet on the ground
you've conquered your first step.
Don't allow this painful memory
define you,
dictate the woman you are meant to be,
Otherwise,
the music box is only playing
for an empty room.

Wow, this is so sad and eerie. There's a lot of emotion in this and the music box in the other room adds to the dramatic feel of the poem. Really well done.
