Backyard Queen

Backyard Queen

A Poem by Cassidy Mask

I’ll build a fairytale castle

Using garden chairs and old sheets

With flowerpot turrets

That reach into the wide blue sky.

I’ll dip my toes into

The paddling pool ocean

And send ripples across its surface

To swallow the distant sandy shores.

Dog will pull my wheelbarrow chariot

And we will race across my kingdom

Surveying my people

As they sit with

Glass eyes

And plastic expressions

On a muddy rug,

Falling forwards into

Plastic teacups.

I’ll wear a beautiful paper crown

Studded with sparkling emeralds

And glittering rubies

The same shade of red as my

Expertly applied lipstick

And Teddy will be my handsome Prince

As he sits beside me

With a similar crown

And an expression of perpetual happiness.

Together we will host marvellous balls

And all the princes and princesses

In the whole entire world

Will come just to see me

In my bright pink ball gown

And matching washing up gloves.

Teddy will fight dragons during the day

While I’ll drink endless cups of Ribena

And go shopping with my maids

Rabbit and Bunny the duck

In the evenings we shall go to the theatre

With our rich and famous friends

And buy all the popcorn and sweets

And stay up till nine o’clock.

But now mummy is calling me

And I better go in for my tea

Because sometimes even

Princesses get into trouble.

I loved this so much. I was in a bad mood before I read it.
It's the story of my childhood! I still do this! The only problem is... I'm getting too big for the wheelbarrow.

What a sweet, enjoyable little tale. I love to see the world through a child's eyes and often write that way myself. If boys were allowed, I'd have liked to have joined you there, Cassidy Mask.
