Fading

Fading

A Poem by George Love

Fading

Into their world thrust he was
Not of choice but of need
In times long since past
He provided love and warmth
Now needing that in kind
Careful not to cause much fuss
Lives to live, their own they must
Lest they watch too closely
And see the light from his eyes so fade
Racked with coughs he holds fast now
Side of the bed he once called safe
Now soiled with his own body
Never safe this cruel spot
Late night spasms rack the frail body
And one more wish for quiet unheeded
No fuss he wishes, no fuss.
Only one warm touch, one warm embrace
To sooth his soul and tender the night.
Yet fast into the night does travel
Darkly now he covers the door
And comes from where, no one knows
Yet rides he on that one pale horse
And look too closely now they do not
As the last light’s whisper
From from his eyes
Does fade.
