Only One Off

Only One Off

A Poem by George Love
"

Ever missed that lottery by one number?

"

Only One Off

Faithful watchful, diligent and true
Praying once more all odds be beaten
Numbers they roll spin, so dizzy they make
As patiently, earnestly and nervously hope
Now numbers revealed as the scroll now by
First one does match, will yet another?
Comes the second, yet another one true
Heart beating faster will the next reveal
A path to riches or simply a waste?
Scrolls once more a number to screen
And scream yet he does and it misses by one!
Yet another chance now waits he the roll
And now hopes dashed again as the one falls too high?
Now the next one comes, should it take flight
Yet now one too low, and sad his plight
Round the fire that night he does tell
Of millions rolled by his hands
Promised he that next single he finds
He’ll not buy that ticket
He’d share one more brew
As his millions flew by
Just one number off!

Here's a story to tell. Someone where I work won millions on the lottery - his job was to sell tickets all week. Of course he was accused buy the customers of fixing or stealing a winning ticket which is not possible. Now the worst thing was he was also called Gary so many people thought I had won.
I've only bought a few tickets in my life and never for me to win so I was completely bemused by this. I was also asked so many times - 'what would I do if I won?'
I have no idea - probably be very popular!

My mom played the lottery once, she played, had all 6 numbers and at the last minute changed one of them, sure enough it came out and she only got 5 numbers. She never played it again. Thank you for sharing and for the memory. Debileah
