Sometimes I Wish

Sometimes I Wish

A Poem by Constance

Sometimes, I wish I I'd known you then

Back when we were young and full of vigor

And had no good way to spend it

          We would have climbed mountains

                          You and I

Sometimes, I wish you'd been there

To share my joy when I accomplished something

To share my sorrow and catch me when I fell

I would have caught you, too, you know

                           Yes, you

Often, I wish I'd known you for years

For years with you I think will come to be

                           The happiest years I've known

And I know it's okay to admit that

                           To you

                           Yet,deep down, I'm glad you weren't there

When I think of the ways in which I've grown

For often loves of youth fall apart

Leaving a path of destruction, and I

                           Made my own

Yes, I am happy to have passed that time

Without you, much as I love you now

For I learned to be myself in those days

Before I knew how wonderful it is

                           To have you

Though I certainly hope, love, to never ever

Pass a span of time without you again

For I need you now, with heart and soul

And maybe, a part of you has always been with me

And a bit of me with you

This poem spoke strongly to me because my sister Constance spoke similar words to me not too long ago. We grew up in a house so full of kids that it was hard to get to know one another. Now, decades later we've begun to get to know each other. Had we just known, we would have climbed mountains together.

I can see the sentiment from the point of view of a current love as well. The two men I've loved in my life I would have given everything I owned to have known them in their youth.

Well written, Constance.
