Lady Change and Mr. Dylan

Lady Change and Mr. Dylan

A Poem by Constance
"

A poem written for the Dylanesque Contest here on the cafe. Inspired mostly by Bob Dylan's song The Times They Are A-Changin, one of my favorites.

"

Lady change is that slick persistant one

Whom we know never will cease

It's so vital to learn to dance to her tune

Before you're losing your feet

Admit that she'll never bow to you or to I

For she, not we, history'll repeat

You taught me this lesson while chuckling truth

With naught but pure, simple song

Though really I still would've learned

As all do if they live very long

The times can change, but we all do, too

We sweep with the tide, it's too strong

I remember your words and I always roll

For I will not be mossy stone

It always seemed that you'd sung just for me

Not letting me go it alone

Oh, life and change, they threw me for loops

I survived with what you and I know

Dylan, you taught us each lesson you'd learned

With sweet simple lyrics and rhyme

You sang out loud and clear and everyone heard

We all heard your message each time

You still hold us all captive to your wit and know

In this way surely you never will die

How time has changed you, she'll also change me

She'll change every one of us sure

But we'll keep on walking and thinking and be

Concious as not to obscure

The truth as it passes, the morals we gather

In spite of the lies and all of their allure

And you'll be remembered as one who all told

Shared all things needing be said

Your songs will be played, that will never change

T'will be aired long after you're dead

And the song in my heart will stay just as true

For you said, sing my own song instead

For we've all learned lessons and changed thirty times

In the least I've changed thirty two

And I will keep changing as time goes along, my

Dance with lady change, never through

Yet I'll try to share what I've learned with the world

As I know you would want all to do

Author's Note

Constance
I tried to give this the same kind of folksy flow of Dylan's The Times They Are A-Changin' just leaving out the chorus variation. It may work better to read if you sing it in your head in a gravely voice with a bit of harmonica and guitar, as you read. (I did so as I wrote it). Fun to write.

A song I still play occasionally on guitar. I knew it by Peter, Paul and Mary first, then learned it was a Dylan song later. (They did many of his songs, as did others) "Come writers and critics who prophesize with your pen, and keep your eyes wide for the chance won't come again..." Yeah, I know that one.
