Dance of death

Dance of death

A Poem by Riley

Dancing and drowning
are one in the same
you're swirling and twirling
every which way
gliding and lunging
gracefully swaying
to one way
flouncing and jolting
as if electrified
slowing and stopping
and then you die

I love the imagery in this; I also love the comparison of dancing and drowning- it hits on many levels. There's the idea of seeing death as something beautiful and intricate such as a dance. There's also the reverse- that in something beautiful there lies a darker meaning. Or, the image of people who are really dying, yet still they smile and follow the steps of their dance like puppets. The deterioration of something once beautiful into something ugly - vanities. Or lastly the ever cliched curse of dancing oneself to death. So many ways to interpret this poem, all of them beautiful I think.
