Anyone

Anyone

A Poem by Dana Alsamsam

"If it's not the style my friends are wearing,
I won't wear it!"
"Why would you want to wear the same thing
As everybody else?"

"For some reason, I decided I don't like
Being different"

My eight year old sister shrugs and prances away
Ponytail swinging, shining auburn in the sunlight,
Smiling blankly. She forgets that the grass tickling
The spaces in between her toes is a feeling
She should love forever.

The chains link around her ankles
Attaching her to a cloned shadow,
And I watch as she grows up and becomes
"Herself" or everyone else or anyone.

I liked how you've presented this piece. If you can't be like your true friends then it's best not to be like anyone else except yourself. Great work. :)

wonderful write...you've wrote once again from your heart and the words again came from your heart and from real life.
great job "Dana"...and keep writing and be happy in your life, with your life...because life's filled with opportunities. Everyone'd love you as you are cuz..being different's good to be but at a stage reality makes your great and your own realness makes your better, nice, good, intellectual to live in this world.
this write is itself a piece...beautiful write.100/100

Somewhere back in our evolutionary history we had common genes with herd animals I think. Is it a safety thing, I wonder? This need to look the same, act the same, not be singled out from the crowd? Where does that leave individuals - exposed and vulnerable, or the vanguard of evolution? Your poem is a fascinating thought starter, Dana. P.

Indeed thought provoking and a little quirky. Was not sure the final line had the desired effect.

Interesting topic and perspective. Makes me think of Pink Floyd "All in all we're just another brick in the wall."

I don't think you have too much to worry about yet, the very young are very impressionable.
