Flag draped coffin

Flag draped coffin

A Poem by Baby Ricochet

She was his faithful down home girl
From his little home town
She had faith in God and Country
White was her wedding gown

She Went to church every Sunday
Unwavered was her faith
Every day she would pray to God
To keep her hero safe

One dreadful day she drove up to
the only local store
She came back to her worst nightmare
A black car by the door

The somber faced Sargent Major
Delivered her the news
He couldn't soften it for her
Not a damn thing he could do

Her hero came home fully dressed
in a flag draped coffin
She was consumed by grief so hard
No words or deeds could soften

There was a Marine Corps funeral
     With tradition and words
She just sat staring at the ground
     Said not a single word

Three weeks later she joined her man
in the cold hallowed ground
Found sprawled out dead on the floor
when her sister came around

Sleeping pills and alcohol
May have played a part
But everyone knew the truth
She died of a broken heart

Tragic. It is unfortunate that this occurs. You tackled the subject with a respectfulness that may surprise some of your new readers but has never surprised me or your loyal fan base. You are a true poet, and this is the proof. Those chills I feel have zero to do with my flu...those chills are all you. Well done.

Isn't it unfair, isn't it to get mad about? so so tragic.... yet, that governement does not much, families get no much credit after they come home from war... and in this case not alive.... I felt this one BR, you penned it in most high honor for this lady... it's reality, and you faced it us once again. Me myself have had a relationship, with a lutanant, and a land force man, I prayed always they came back home, and I was lucky. But this is a woman's worse nightmare. Thank you for sharing this Baby.

Always, Mark...
So sad. Such is the way of the world so much pain, heartache and despair.

I have been trying to write a piece..but so far no luck...for it touches deeply as I am sure it does for you... this is beautiful & so sad...and I pray it isn't true... I watched a local man come home to us at our airbase a few months back Sgt. McPherson his widow & two year old son opened it to the community to witness his return... I am sure you know what it felt like...I am blathering on to much..but it is what your piece brought up..
You wrote a heart wrenching & touching piece SIr

the last line of this broke my own slightly. Though I cannot begin to understand such trauma, it is every woman's worst nightmare. Beautifully written, as always

This is a heartbreaking; but lovely piece, filled to the brim with emotion. It makes me think about how I would feel if my Major (that is his name; he isn't a major yet, lol) didn't come back to me if he went out to war like so many before. Nice job.
