A Problem of Understanding

February 11, 1985

I find myself
I find my ways
Thought out of place.

I knew not
Why they worried
About my seeming
Different ways.

No one tried
To explain
Why it was
That I was shunned.

Now I know
Why they shunned me,
Now I know
What I must do.

I must learn
To be more separate;
I must learn
My proper place.

Until I learn
To be more separate
I will always
Be apart.

My friends must surely
Stay far from me,
They understand not
My true intentions.

I find myself
I find that I
Cannot be me.

They want a friend
Who is as they are,
They want me
To change for them.

Do I truly
Want their friendship?
Or do I simply
Want belonging?
