A Chapter by Debbie Barry

A poem. Being lonely while married is especially hard.

March 30, 1989

It's a very hard thing
For a young girl to be.
It's a painful life
She must live.

The world is a crowded,
Noisome place -
How much of herself
Must she give?

How can she smile
At lighthearted mirth
From dashing young suitors
And friends,

When every moment
Of every day,
Her weeping soul
Seeks a new end?
