The Snail and the Butterfly

The Snail and the Butterfly

A Poem by Debbie Barry
"

A new nursery rhyme that wandered through my mind.

"

The Snail and the Butterfly

The snail, he watch’d the chrysalis,

With a question on his mind.

He waited for the shell to crack;

To see what he would he find.

The sun shone warm, and crack’d the shell;

From it came the butterfly.

“I’ve watch’d and waited,” said the snail,

“I wonder’d the       reason why:

“Why stay’d you in your shell so long?”

Ask’d the snail, as she took wing.

“Silly snail,” the butterfly laugh’d,

“I woke to fly in the spring.”

“You, too, sleep in your shell,” she laugh’d.

“Indeed, I do,” snail did grin.

“But you come out just once,” he said,

“While I go both out and in!”

Initial reactions and constructive criticism welcome. It's supposed to have the feel of a traditional nursery rhyme.
