in the woods

in the woods

A Poem by Ed Hart
"

"

in the woods

i was broke

by a bad run of cards

so barney stood for me

we shared his cabin

sitting nights sipping jack

by his wood stove

enjoying a little smoke

while talking the world

back into shape

we often drove

ourselves part crazy

laughing through

what we didn't know

about women

                      until

he'd push off to bed

while drowsy embers

danced me to the edge of sleep

clear nights

i'd take my sleeping bag

to the long porch

and lay on a bench

until i blended in

once

as i drifted

into the heavens

an old ghost owl

glided by my nose

waking me

to the sanity of stars

out there

just like me

I love this! I do not really know the language of poetry critiquing, but I can see and feel this picture poem, and like your word choices. a lovely story, Ed!
It made me want to be there!

Beautiful poem is this, posturing a simple moment of unity with the universe.

It is a constant source of wonder to me that just words and words alone can have such impact; how they can conjure up so clear a picture that the scene depicted becomes a reality in the mind's eye.

The brushstrokes of a master are no more accomplished; and it is why I love poetry so much.

Beccy.

There is a permanence to the heavens; as of course there is to the tiniest pebble on a far distant beach, that defines us a simply transient visitors passing through.

Nevertheless, warts and all, I'd rather be a frail human than a star or a pebble.

Grand poetry this. T

oh Ed how I missed your writing.. I always thought your voice to be full of wisdom. what a brilliant line - sanity of stars- it is striking on so many levels.

thank you Sue, how nice to have you stop by
I know you have lived your sanities and paid your insanities with treble damages, and I am constantly in wonder at how you write these mini-novellas so crisp and cleanly while still throwing out a sky-full of constellations before us.

my good friends forgive my wanton muse, and leave such kindness in their wake
~ i think sanity is very under-rated these days... and we need voices like yours to show us what it means to be one with the universe...
