Starlight

Starlight

A Poem by Elly
"

A little poem about rejection, hope and stars. I've had this piece kicking around in my head for a little while. Note: The 'rejection' in this poem is meant to apply to any sort of rejection or pain.

"

I stand on the grass

Looking up at the sky

Willing a tear

Not to fall from my eye

Another rejection

More wasted time

To hurt someone like this

Should be considered a crime

The grass is cool beneath my feet

My eyes look up, and soon they meet

A star that twinkles in the night

A single speck, sparkling so bright

Isn’t it funny

How that one little light

Had to wait so long to shine tonight?

The star is long dead, forgotten by some

And only now does its light come

And maybe, just maybe

That speck in the sky

Serves to remind us, you and I

That one day we’ll be gone

Our souls free, calm and light

And we might still give off

A single, twinkling light

I smile to myself as my tears dry

And I think of how it’s silly to cry

When I’ve got risks to take, and friends to make

Maybe even a heart or two to break

Thoughts to state

Folks to love, to hate

And a little starlight of my own to create

Wow...I have a lot to say about this so I'm going to do it in parts. We'll start with the first paragraph:
'Willing a tear, not to fall from my eye.' These two lines are powerful. I feel that sometimes we may wish so vehemtly that something isn't true, but it still is, sometimes coming to realize that reality is more painful then the original shock. To will something not to happen doesn't mean its not going to. These two lines illustrate that beautifully.

'To hurt someone like this, should be a crime.' We can report people who abuse us emotionally and physically but not when they break our hearts. I wonder what the police would say if someone went in and said that a person was abusing them, when really, all the person had done was break their heart. It really should be a crime. But then more of us would be guilty of doing this. These lines show that we don't like it when we're hurt, but it still happens.

'That star is long dead, forgotten by some, and only now does it's light come.' Most famous artists weren't famous when they were alive. It seems that when people are gone does their light come. Just like the star you describe. Beautiful...

'And we might still, give off a single twinkling light.' Even if it's only a little tiny bit of light, it's still a light. A little bit of light is better then a lot of darkness. At least there's something to hold onto. This also reminds me of influencing people and how even the smallest bit of light can attract people's attention.

'And a little starlight of my own to create.' We all have the opportunity to make our own starlight, to shine.

This is very well written and as it says in your last line, 'my own to create' you have made some very wonderful starlight in this poem. This is going into my favorites. Thank you for it.

Emotions were definately tugged here and the use of stars to describe the pain of a break up and then the final optimism when she has that moving on point and hope shines. Wonderful poem that can truely relate to just about anyone that has ever been dumped. *Two thumbs up*
