El Libro

A Poem by emipoemi

Soy un libro polvoriento                                    I’m a book of dust and mildew

Sobre tu estantería-                                                Sitting lonely on your shelf-

Hace tiempo que me sacaste                        You had from your humble bookstore

De tu humilde librería.                                    Long since bought me for yourself.

Te había fascinado                                                I by my quixotic story

Mi quijotesca historia,                                    Held your fiery fascination,

Pero al traerme a tu casa,                                    Yet you brought me home, and cast me

Me echaste de tu memoria.                                    Out of your consideration.

Día tras día yacía,                                                Day after day I lingered,

Noche tras noche esperaba-                                    Night after night I waited-

A veces te atreviste a abrirme,                        At times you opened me to shut me,

Pero no leíste ni palabra.                                    All at once unmotivated.

¡No me dejes entre las sombras!                        Leave me not amid the shadows!

¡No me excluyas de te entretener!                        Exclude me not from pleasing you!

Que nunca sabrás mi historia                        For you’ll never know my story

Si no me empiezas a leer.                                    If you never read me through.

the personification is so well delivered here and i can draw so many parallels between the feelings and thoughts of a book and that of a person longing to be discovered.
really great one emi, enjoyed!

So glad you did! And you hit on a good interpretation. Thanks for reading.
Oh my gosh, I have to read Don Quixote now. I saw the reference but have never read the book. I have ignored this book for far too long! You've inspired me. I love that you gave the words in Spainsh and English. Yo quiero vivir en un lugar donde espanol es la idioma primero para la gente. Yo espero que puedo apprender hablar, escribir, y entender espanol con fluencia. MAIN THING: the personification of the book was incredible! I love hearing inanimate objects brought to life. I believe books have souls and you have just exposed one eloquently.
