A Poem by emipoemi

A poem may receive substantial praise,
And soothe the poet with uplifting fans.
A poem may receive substantial pans,
And leave the poet in dismay for days.
The praisers stoke the keen poetic fire,
Some with good cheer, some merely to be kind
From being rather shy to speak their mind,
Aware they could the poet’s wrath inspire.
The panners tear the poems into pieces,
And crush the poets ’til they grow to seed.
Yet they mean well with such a ruthless deed,
Desiring simply to smooth out the creases.
For in the end, though pans seem out of spite,
They but advise and aid to better write.

Haha, great observation! Criticism isn't for the faint-hearted, is it? As you said, critiques are only meant to better oneself in a particular field and one should not take them to heart. Enjoyed it!

No problem
Definitely appreciate this poem because I appreciate critisizm, but I have to admit I’m not as good dishing it out(a big reason I honestly can usually find things to like in a piece of poetry).

I like the rhyme scheme. I don’t think I’ve ever used an ABBA rhyme sceme, but I like it here, so maybe I’ll try it out. I notice this poem has 14 lines and ends on two rhyming lines (if I’m not mistaking it’s also in iambic pintameter?). Is it a type of sonnet that doesn’t have the ababcdcdefefgg rhyme scheme?

I enjoyed it!
