My son, the hero

My son, the hero

A Poem by emz
"

My son is going to afgan soon... just a little insight to how i feel.

"

I close the curtains against the sun,

don't want the light to shine

on my tear stained face.

It,s been 2 hours,

since last goodbyes,

i send him off

with all my love and grace.

Your still my baby boy,

in my broken heart,

although 18 and manly,

worldly wise,

I cant accept the meaning

of this part,

i will hold you firmly,

always in my eyes.

As proud a mother feels

inside her soul,

its all you ever wanted

from your life,

but when the one she loves

then leaves the fold,

it only ever feels like

cutting knife.

This war is not a war

we,re meant to fight

but the perfect soldier

you were bred to be,

you will never in these months

be out my sight,

i await the day

that you come back to me.

Most of us when overwhelmed, write about their parents and the time spent with them and e.t.c...but a very few of us have the time, the need and the courage to let out our emotions and feelings about our children, and when it does come out, its just too deep and touchy to grasp...perhaps we are just too naive to accept sometimes. This is one such poem, that's full of love and moving emotionality.
I hope wherever ur son is, he's doing fine...by the grace of the Lord.

wow, my mother must of felt similar feeling when three of us went away in the military but especially when our youngest brother went to mesopatamia/iraq 2x! He might still have to go a 3rd time & its sad. great write/read. true story? your kid is that old?

Very, very moving. Yes, letting our children spread their wings and fly is a bittersweet experience. You captured the essence of love and letting go, so brilliantly. It made me want to read more . . .

This is a wonderful glimpse into the heart of a mother. Yes, these words are "insight into how you feel", but to your son, they are life... the heartbeat of the one that brought him into this world... the heartbeat that, as a fetus, he could not live without and now, as an adult, simply would not want to live without. As the only child of a single mom, I can tell you that these words are going to continue to grow inside of him for the rest of his life. This is a very touching display of the mothers heart... unwavering. My favorite, I would have to say, would be the last stanza....

This war is not a war
we,re meant to fight
but the perfect soldier
you were bred to be,

I can only say that war is a very difficult subject and these lines are so delicately balanced. Bravo...

If I can just get them to sleep through the night, to walk on their own, to first grade, to high school... and the poof, you turn around, your child is an adult and you wonder where all the time went, wanting to only have to worry about getting them to sleep through the night.

I found this to resonate the core of every mother's heart, that we can never really let go. Well written flow, almost like a conversation. My favorite line" I send him off with all my love and grace."
May Godspeed be with your son and for his safe return.

This tears at the heart so deeply; especially from a Mother's point of view, but for any parent who has a child who's gone to be a warrior, the emotions never change, from the earliest times to this very day.
This is almost overwhelming.

tears. this poem touches a kindred fiber in anyone, because inherently we all can relate to the pain of child having to leave to fight war. why was he "bred to be"? strange how that works with some nightmare of my own. nice piece.

Your words moved me to tears ... A very difficult moment for a mother, and a hard time to go through and hopefully he'll return safely.

A wonderfully written poem with a great rhythm and flow. An easy read with a very deep and touching essence.
