Sleep

Sleep

A Poem by Erica Ross
"

What does sleep and a prostitute have in common?

"
There is something about sleep
It is so scary, yet so sweet
It is amazing how sleep can control your body,
to make you fall out in an instant, even at a noisy party
I have never felt so vulnerable and not in control in my life,
until sleep crept criminally upon me one night
BUT, let me switch gears for a second
Sleep can make you feel like you are in heaven
When I am sleep, I have no worries
Sweet dreams or horrid nightmares, either way, I am in no hurry..
To wake up, because the feeling is that great huh?
Sleeping makes me forget all of my troubles for a while
I know that I can't see me, but I can imagine that I smile
All of the troubles of the day, they fade away as I lay
But when I awake, it is like the troubles have never left
They are right back in my head, screaming loudly as I am gasping for breath
Now I think of sleep as a vengeful prostitute
Sneaking upon my innocence for a dollar or two, but instead, my time
To pleasure me and to make me smile, making it all worth my while
But then to leave me out there in the cold, to leave me with new troubles to unfold
And when she leaves, she goes about her way to lure in another innocent soul
Boy, is she cold.
